BA Flight cancellations anyone have any experience?

DS's flight from Copenhagen has been cancelled, and he has been put up in a hotel and the flight rebooked for the morning. All good.

Problem is he should have been staying at a hotel at LHR tonight (all booked in advance, no cancellation allowed) and has a timed train ticket for a connection from Heathrow which he will now definitely miss.

Will BA pay for the hotel booking and the train ticket that couldn't be used?

BA will give you €600 as standard compensation.

Thank you for the link. I think it might be lower because the km is the lowest but that will still cover everything.

He only went for 3 nights in the first place. Sad

Go onto FlyerTalk, the BA page is wonderful, it is great, he can ask for advice there.

You will only get compensation if the reason for cancellation falls with eu621

He hasn't lost any money not using the hotel in LHR as they have paid for a hotel in CPH

The compensation is all you can claim but it's worth checking with the train as they sometimes allow alterations of you have proof it's the airlines fault.

LostInNorfolk · 25/07/2019 22:50

The train company may let him travel on another train, he needs to ask the guard before boarding but there is a rule that if you are delayed whilst on route they have the discretion to let you travel.

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/07/2019 22:54

BA won't cover the costs of his LHR total or train ticket. That's what travel insurance is for. BA state quite clearly on their website that they don't cover consequential losses.

He can claim EU261 compensation though and his success will depend on the reason for the cancellation. It's very straightforward to make a claim on BA's website.

Yes I did think that, the CPH hotel might be better!

I will tell him to ask about the train ticket it must happen a lot.

Thanks also for the flyertalk link I will get him to have a look. He is currently occupying his time being cross. Hmm

Not entirely sure what the reason for cancellatio is TBH. It went from a two hour delay to an 11 hour delay then cancelled. Problems at Heathrow possibly.

I think the excess on his travel insurance is £100 so he will have to weight that one up.

The plane from LHR was delayed then cancelled. Click under flight details

www.flightstats.com/v2/flight-tracker/BA/820?year=2019&month=07&date=25&flightId=1008179954

As it was from LHR which is the BA hub they are expected to be able to find a replacement plane and so eu621 will usually apply unless it is weather or industrial action?

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2019 23:06

Mmm, I am wondering if it's weather related. Heat or thunderstorms or something?
I guess he'll find out soon enough.

There will be people travelling for work and other important stuff that will be way more inconvenienced than DS. An unexpected extra night in a hotel sounds ok to me. Grin

Ah so all claims are off if it's weather related Lost?

OP posts:
LostInNorfolk · 25/07/2019 23:14

yes, usually

The airline still have a duty of care to look after you and get you where you are meant to be going.including accommodation, meals and transport.

But that would be to LHR.

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2019 23:17

Sounds like they are doing that and they have already booked him on a flight for tomorrow so all told I think BA have done their bit.

He will be home eventually.

The thread on FlyerTalk is filling up- lots stuck on the ground at heathrow and all over northern europe by the look of it

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2019 23:20

Yes I have been reading the posts, people sat on the tarmac waiting then getting taken off. He's had it lucky in comparison with some people.

With regard to the additional train fare, I once got another airline to cough up after a bit of a debate. As one poster suggested, initially they said travel insurance, but that would have left me with paying the excess.

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/07/2019 05:29

We've had non-flexible train bookings refunded after providing proof of unavoidable cancellation, get him to screenshot anything useful.

My DS is on his way to Heathrow for a flight which has just been cancelled Sad.

Rememberallball · 26/07/2019 06:17

You may find he gets a transfer of his train ticket as many of the train operators were telling passengers not to travel yesterday unless absolutely necessary. Advise him to go to the ticket office at the station once’s he’s back in Heathrow and see if they will sign his ticket over to today using the heat as a reason his journey was disrupted - they can only say no and that BA are responsible for covering the replacement ticket as it was down to BA that he wasn’t in the right place for the train he was booked on.

hadthesnip2 · 26/07/2019 06:28

Weren't BA air crew supposed to be going on strike....?? It wouldnt put it past them to use the weather as an excuse if they didnt have enough staff to fly certain flights.

StarlightLady · 26/07/2019 07:26

Strikes require a notice period.

FraterculaArctica · 26/07/2019 07:30

I was at a station yesterday in the SE and they announced that all advance tickets for trains yesterday would be valid today.

FraterculaArctica · 26/07/2019 07:32

Sorry just realised his train is today. But there are still lots of cancellations on the trains this morning so I think they will be pretty flexible about ticket validity.

Sparklingbrook · 26/07/2019 07:35

Thanks all. He's definitely going to ask the question about the train ticket.
Today's flight seems to be leaving on time so far according to the website.
