Shock from escalator - is this normal?

I've had plenty of static shocks in my time but never one like this, is this normal? I was on an escalator today, got on holding the rail (all fine) - about halfway down (still holding on) I got a shock like I've never had before - enough to loudly shout ow and cause pain and tingling up to my elbow for an hour or so (6 hours later fingers still tingling but no pain). I did tell the security guard and he radioed it in but when I went back 30 mins later it was up and running so presumably they don't think there's an issue with it.

Can I get a static shock when I am standing still but in a moving escalator? Should it be that painful?! Bit nervous to use it again!

John Lewis in Birmingham?! I get shocks on their escalator all the time 😭 I don't think it's normal!

@HunterHearstHelmsley - it was in Bracknell, had plenty of shocks before when first touching something but never when holding on already - really hurt!

Same in JL. It's bloody weird and surprisingly painful. I'm not being very helpful!

It’s static build up usually from wearing synthetic shoes and walking from carpeted areas on to the escalator. Or that’s what I recall hearing years ago!

@Soola when that's happened to me before it's happened the moment I've touched the surface and I've received a shock - this was when I'd already been holding on halfway down and it was much bigger. Google isn't helping me much as it just talks about regular static shocks as you first touch the surface.

Apparently this morning the escalator has been closed to be investigated so that's good, hopefully they can stop it happening again.
