Cricket - Ashes test match

Has anyone been to the Ashes before? My DS has been lucky enough to win a competition to be the mascot for the 1st day of the first test of the ashes. He is a absolutely beside himself excited. We have only ever been to T20 matches before not test matches, my question is will there be things for kid to do during the match like there is at the T20? We normally take a break from the sitting down by having a go on the various different batting or bowling games etc. Also am I allowed to take our own food/drinks in? Any Ashes tips gratefully received.

There are no restrictions on food and drink other than nothing in glass. Sometimes no cans either. And no alcohol.

There won't be much in the way of other activities going on officially but there's always a few people having a knock about round the backs of the stands.

It will be fab. Respect the unwritten rule of not moving (such as to go or return from toilet or bar) during an over. I get very cross with people who don't respect that one!

I've done both. T20 is "funner" with less rules, and more relaxed. Ashes don't usually have any other activities on; and you need to be seated for the overs. You can go to the toilet/bar/walk around between overs.

I love both, but they're quite different!

Thanks for the replies. So I will pack a picnic hopefully saving the many pounds DS would expect me to spend on food. I will make sure to follow the not moving during an over rule and explain to DS there wont be as much going on outside of the cricket. I think Edgbaston us supposed to have a reputation for people dressing up so may have a but more 'fun' atmosphere than some of the other grounds.

Edgbaston definitely does have that reputation for dressing up and really good crowds. You'll have a fab time.

Are you in the Hollies stand? That's the fun one at Edgbaston - they'll sing and dress up, which is fun. It's quite swear-y at times, but they usually keep it mostly in check.

There still won't be much else on activity wise; but food and drink there isn't too expensive, and it's a lovely ground. It's really hot in the sun, so I'd take hats!

Edgbaston is my favourite Smile
