Why didn't that work?

It works, I clicked through to a job ad

Instagran · 25/07/2019 13:21

Why do you think it's a waste of money?

BloodyWorried · 25/07/2019 13:22

Palliative care offer many therapies in any area.

BloodyWorried · 25/07/2019 13:22

Our area

CrazyDuchess · 25/07/2019 13:24

Not seeing the issue here - it's to support cancer patients going through gruelling treatment - if it helps some patients I dont think it's a waste of money.

FixTheBone · 25/07/2019 13:27

What @CrazyDuchess said.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what the cost effectiveness is, or if there is good evidence, offering a cheap placebo that keeps people away from expensive specialist pain services can be of a benefit to both the NHS and the patients.

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 25/07/2019 13:29

It's a lot of money for something with no evidence base
It promotes the belief that raiki is genuine.
There are cheaper options that do not pretend to be more than they are
Although I guess the practitioner could work from home. My friend is a raiki master, if that's the right term, and she can send out distance raiki

I'd love it if the NHS offered reflexology. I find it really helps my MS.

Frith2013 · 25/07/2019 14:37

My friend is a raiki master, if that's the right term, and she can send out distance raiki

Yeah. No she can’t.

TooMuchEyeliner · 25/07/2019 15:08

I knew somebody who had reiki on the NHS when she had terminal cancer. She found it extremely relaxing and useful in dealing with the emotional side of what she was going through. Surely that's worth the money?

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 25/07/2019 15:13

I don't think an NHST should be paying for non evidence based interventions
They could fund therapies such as relaxation, mindfullness, massage
Anything that doesn't pretend to be more than it is. It gives the impression that it is genuine
But funding should not be from the medical pot, it should be raised separately

OP posts:
CrazyDuchess · 25/07/2019 15:34

I just cant agree with you.

If it provides relaxation and supports their mental and physical health, who are we to tell them to go have mindfulness instead?

Also it's a £30k post - I am sure the NHS can make more savings and generate cash elsewhere!

VioletCharlotte · 25/07/2019 15:46

Have you ever had Reiki Op?

If not, maybe give it a go before passing judgment. I know numerous people, who have had reiki when suffering from various conditions, who have found it really helps. Not with treating the condition itself, but by helping them to totally relax, sleep better, etc.

For many people, it's a much better option that just popping more painkillers.

munemema · 25/07/2019 15:52

The NHS is horribly wasteful but I can't disapprove of this. Obviously I don't have any figures but I'd guess it's relatively cheap compared to many conventional treatments with questionable success rates.

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 25/07/2019 16:50

I have had reiki. I have a friend who has practised for the last 30 odd years
No more than any relaxation which would be much cheaper
I don't believe she can transfer energy to me or any other person

SummerSeasoning · 25/07/2019 16:57

I am all for placebo effects but I agree with OP about Reiki.

I don't think the government can be seen to support spiritual healing practices.

LoveB · 25/07/2019 17:00

It worked for me! Fixed my shoulder. I was highly sceptical too.

Picklypickles · 25/07/2019 17:35

I used to work as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities. One of our service users was a lady with bipolar disorder and severe tourettes, she literally spent days and nights pacing up and down and shouting non stop, very agitated for very long periods and often violent with it. She had an hour of reiki every week and the effect it had on her was incredible, it was the only time she was quiet and relaxed and she looked totally at peace it was wonderful.

Firecarrier · 25/07/2019 18:23

I agree OP. It is a spiritual practice and therefore should not be promoted by the NHS unless they're promoting other spiritual things...

MyFokMarelize · 25/07/2019 18:25

My friend is a raiki master, if that's the right term, and she can send out distance raiki

It's not 'raiki' - it's REIKI. If you're going to bang on about something at least be sure what exactly you're on about.
And your friend is a charlatan.

Allli · 25/07/2019 18:46

Having had various alternative therapies, the majority of which I paid for, I have found that many of these offer some relief from symptoms which regular western medicine cannot seem to help. Generally by the time people try these therapies they are as a last resort. Many people are in pain or are exhausted by long term illness. Any relief from this will be most gratefully received. I understand why people don’t think these treatments should be provided by the nhs, you probably haven’t got a long term debilitating illness for which you have tried everything you can in desperation to escape the symptoms, so respectfully, you may not understand. It would be better to remain open minded and in time I’m sure you will get the proof you need to convince you of it’s benefits. It’s cheaper than many medicines, if it wasn’t effective the nhs wouldn’t offer it. Please refrain from calling therapists charlatans when you are unfamiliar with the topic.
