Leaving home mid morning tomorrow, need a packed lunch for Saturday, would you ?

I'll admit I didn't think this through properly.

I've done the same trip often before, just made the lunches before we leave, put them in cool box in the boot with ice blocks, leaving it in the car overnight.

However, it is currently unusually warm and (this is the bit I didn't think about) in the past we've left later on the Friday, after work.

I could stop and buy something ready made on Saturday morning but money, time etc.

What do you think? I'm not going to do anything stupid like prawns, but if I do safe foods (cheese?) will it be nice to eat by Saturday lunchtime?

Take canned tuna bread and cucumber plus a knife? Or there's also fashioned sandwich fillers - I still love Salmon &shrimp paste! Canned ham even. All the other foods can be long life.

Ps heavy rain forecast for Saturday and 20 degrees so check the mountain forecast for where you will be, keep safe

Marmite sandwiches. Delicious.

UrsulaPandress · 25/07/2019 12:49

Mmmm sandwich spread.

A frozen 2 litre bottle of water will keep things cold in a cool box for 2 days quite easily. I often use one or two for camping.

Bananas, little ring pull tins of fruit, juice cartons.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 25/07/2019 13:22

Bag of nuts
Apples
Cereal bars or flapjacks
Breadsticks
Jar of gherkins, pickled onions etc
Pepperomi sticks (they don’t need the fridge do they?)
I’d take a block of cheese (freeze the block and take it frozen in the cool box) & crackers, pot of chutney. The cheese might get warm but it won’t kill you unlike prawns etc

Bag of jelly babies for a sugar hit, I have ran marathons and the jelly babies saved me! So if it’s going to be a hard day & calories are needed they are great.

With the heat make sure you have fluids covered, as you are going to need a lot more than usual.

Seconding just freezing sandwiches. They will be fine in cool bag overnight.

BlueSkiesLies · 25/07/2019 13:39

If you are in a car with a coll box - I would eihter make and freeze sandwiches (no salad) and they will be fine. Or take food items like cheeese and ham and bread in the cool box nad assemble on satruday morning.

IF you are hiking and not taking a cool box, I would do something like wraps with peanut butter and jam, or wraps with darylee (needs no fridge) and peperami and some carrot sticks or something. Or crackers but you have to be careful not to smash to smithereens. Or a john west tuna salad thing.

Don't use ice blocks - what a waste!

use frozen drinks to keep your food cool, then you also get cool-ish drinks as well.

munemema · 25/07/2019 13:59

Why are ice blocks a waste? They stay frozen longer than drinks do (although I often do that too) and when we get home, will go back in the freezer for next time.

Lots of ideas here, thank you

Ice blocks aren't a waste in transit but, like some of the other idea, wouldn't be things to lug up and down hills.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/07/2019 15:05

^ What Errol said. Why on earth would you want to unnecessary lug extra weight up and down an "epic mountain hike" when you could just drink it instead.

munemema · 25/07/2019 15:31

Hmm, that's why I didn't understand the point, it never occurred to me that people would think I would carry them up the actual mountain Grin I thought I was being accused of wasting ice

ErrolTheDragon · 25/07/2019 16:03

Yeah, I was assuming you knew that!Grin

Frozen drinks often don’t melt as fast as you expect.
