Do you think it’s safer to swim in the sea when you have a cut on your leg than a swimming pool ?

In terms of avoiding infections
It’s not a bleeding cut but I don’t think it’s fully scabbed over Either

Depends what kind of wound - if it's a scratch then you're daft to worry about it

Lardlizard · 25/07/2019 10:04

One that went right through the skin

Not a scratch

Both salt and chlorine would have an antiseptic effect wouldn’t they? But more likely to encounter human germs in the pool and general (sewage?!) germs in the sea, so probably a risk of infection either way. More chance of being eaten by a hungry shark in the sea though!

I dont think you should swim in a public pool with an open wound (which seems to be what you are describing).
And if it's not healed, I think it would sting like buggery in the sea.

So I think I'd give it a rest today, and swim tomorrow.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 25/07/2019 10:08

Sea water is good for cuts! Unless you're going spearfishing in a shark ridden area, of course, in which case stay out Wink

Pools aren't that bad either, though, they are usually extremely chlorinated.
Hope you get better soon...

NiLunNiLautre · 25/07/2019 10:17

Both will be fine.

anothernotherone · 25/07/2019 10:24

Sea water is antibacterial and anti inflammatory so can help healing, but only if the sea is clean...

Babdoc · 25/07/2019 10:27

Why don’t you stick a waterproof dressing on? Then it won’t matter where you swim.

Soubriquet · 25/07/2019 10:28

I would say the sea purely for the salt water as it’s good for wounds

Knittedfairies · 25/07/2019 10:32

Sea water is very unlikely to be clean enough to help healing.

Brakebackcyclebot · 25/07/2019 10:36

Depends how many sharks there are.

If it's bleeding please don't get into a public swimming pool. That's grim.

Grasspigeons · 25/07/2019 10:36

I got severe cellulitis after a sea swim with a small open wound. Something to do with fish bacteria. It was the most painful thing, hot sweats and quite frightening with some iv antibiotics. The skin went black and still aches occassionally. So i dont sea swim with open wounds any more.

listsandbudgets · 25/07/2019 10:57

Clean sea water is good for cuts but watch out for jelly fish as if they get you on a cut I am told it will hurt like hell.

Lardlizard · 26/07/2019 14:16

Should be quite clean the beach we go to as it’s a blue flag

The sea is full of bacteria while the chlorine in a pool tends to kill it.

mollyblack · 26/07/2019 14:22

Neither are a good idea. But yes just get a waterproof dressing if you want to swim. I used them over my fresh tattoo for a few weeks so i could still sea swim, kept it totally dry.

Lardlizard · 26/07/2019 14:28

Mollyback which ones did you use ? I’m a bit skepitcal that they are totally waterproof

mollyblack · 28/07/2019 20:17

Sorry I'm probably too late but ive just seen this. I used this over a dressing, i tested it in the shower as it was on a crease and it didnt let any water in, the dressing underneath was dry after every sea swim
