Places to visit in or around Suffolk

I'm driving kids (teenagers) from Suffolk back home to Yorkshire this weekend. We could combine this with some sightseeing - what would you recommend to see in or around Suffolk? Any nice beaches or other places like castles to visit, please? Thanks.

Framlingham Castle
Aldeburgh beach
Dedham vale
There are lists of places in Suffolk, which area will you be in?

Suffolk is large and driving from there to Yorkshire always seems to take a lot longer than it should. That said, my personal recommendation is Framlingham. Lovely castle, though ruined, beautiful village , not too touristy.

Framlingham
Southwold
Orford
Aldeburgh
Dunwich
Lavenham

Bury St Edmunds is a nice town and its on the a14 en route out of suffolk.

Newmarket early in the morning. Around 9am. You can see the racehorses training, theyre crossing the roads all round town, near the centre.

My favourite part of Suffolk is the coast - particularly Aldeburgh. But I don't know if that takes you in the opposite direction to where you need to drive? If so I'd agree with Bury St Edmunds as it's lovely and probably won't take you far out of your way.

IlluminatiConfirmed · 25/07/2019 09:24

Oooh perfect - thank you, lots of great ideas, I like the idea of the coastline (Orford, Aldeburgh, Southwold) too. Yes it would take us out of our way a bit but we have the whole day to get home so not a problem.

Is Shingle Street worth stopping at or is it just a quirky place with not much no see?

Bury St Edmunds could be an alternative option if it rains a lot (that's a possibility!)

We had a holiday in Suffolk last year because DD (then 19 had a summer job there) and were pleasantly surprised by the options.

It depends what you're into, of course - the castles mentioned are good, there's a couple of unusual 'stately homes' with moats around the house and the garden, but my top pick would be Minsmere RSPB which combines coast, woods and of course loads of wildlife.

Suffolk is fairly large. Can u narrow it down. I live here and can help. But need a smaller distance to work with Smile

If u were thinking a beach to play on. I wouldn’t go to single street or adleburgh as they are both full of stones. Felixstowe has a better child friendly beach. Also has amusements etc. Places to buy ice creams etc. Aldburgh doesn’t have things like that across the front. It has a row of shops behind which is lovely for older not really for children with one ice cream shop. Good fish and chips !!!!

Thorpness is a few mins down the road. Has a wonderful cafe /restaurant called the kitchen. Amazing food. U can take the dogs in and has a shop at the back with house clearance stuff in that u can wonder around for hours. Also a lake with boats to rent.

If ur coming down the A12 this way towards Ipswich Felixstowe etc. There is Colchester zoo just off it. Takes a few mins t get there from the A12

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 25/07/2019 13:31

If you are anywhere Ipswich and coming fairly soon we have the Elmer trail. Lots of companies decorated huge elephants that are shown around the area. There is a map and stickers to collect as u find them. Also in Ipswich is the water front with some nice cafes.

Kentwell hall if they are interested in history.
There's also a good airfield but it's a long time since I went.

I see that Framlingham Castle and Kentwell Hall were already mentioned. My children both like Sutton Hoo as well.
