Where to visit in the UK?

DD11 and I cannot afford a holiday abroad this year, so looking to do something in the UK. Over the years we've done Worcester, London, Chester and York (which she loved). Looking for somewhere we can travel to via train from Birmingham. While it needs to be kid friendly, DD isn't keen on museums - she loves cathedrals, zoos, just mooching around, going for a walk and seeing where we end up, street shows, art & crafts, parks, canals etc. Am trying to think outside the box, but if anyone has any they'd be gratefully received.

People come from all over the world to Edinburgh Festival. AFAIK It's the biggest arts festival in the world? It's something really special IMO.

Exeter isn't crap. It's a lovely city with great links to many other Devon attractions.

Came to say Edinburgh but see I am late to the party. Accommodation will be tricky tho, my family member moves out of her Edinburgh home for August as she can get £300 a night for air bnb! Maybe worth investigating accommodation outwith the city on bus or train routes as you would struggle at this late hour to get anything decent in the city centre that doesn't cost a fortune.

Whitby is nice and close to Scarborough which is lovely too and very child friendly.

York, Canterbury, Chester, Edinburgh, Lake District, North Cornwall/Devon.

Edinburgh is a great idea, the fringe is fantastic.

Also if she loved York then I think she'd like Bath too. If you have a car then you could explore Bath, Bristol and Cheddar Gorge in one holiday. Wells is lovely too.

Snowdonia and Anglesey

I've lived in Exeter and it is mostly ugly ( was heavily bombed during the war), very congested and very polluted. On the outskirts, Topsham is worth a visit.

Perhaps Winchester? Gorgeous cathedral, and lots of old buildings, things to look at/do...
Also would mean you'd be very close to the coast and The New Forest, which is beautiful. Loads of gorgeous walks, quirky little villages
Easy to get to by train, direct from Birmingham, possibly even bus/coach, and so many places nearby so it's a great central location to explore from.

Look at getting the train to Edinburgh - and maybe stop off in Durham or Newcastle on the way. The scenery once north of Newcastle is stunning!

Oh, and there's a lovely zoo (Marwell) very close by, and is accessible by bus from Winchester if you're relying on public transport to get around.

Another vote for Liverpool! 2 cathedrals and so much culture/fun stuff to do! Walk around the docks, boat trip down the Mersey, great shopping, tons of museums/galleries, cool food markets, exhibitions, festivals in parks across the summer

Glasgow. Much cheaper than Edinburgh and more to do with kids that won't cost anything- plenty of parks and museums etc. Go to Edinburgh for the day perhaps, while staying in Glasgow. I find Edinburgh a total nightmare at festival time, but each to their own!
