What to say to kids (speech problem)

Evening all

My daughter has trouble pronouncing a lot of sounds. She has just finished reception and has been having speech therapy and has come on hugely since September.

We are at the park tonight and she said a word which didn’t come out right and a boy from her class made a big issue about how to say it correctly. Luckily my daughter wasn’t bothered about it but it’s the 2nd time it’s happened now with another girl pointing out another word she said wrong.

What would you say to the kid to get them to back off or to explain the situation?

I wouldn't.

I assume you've been given things to practice with your child. I'd work on those over the next few weeks of summer and hope her speech improves during that time.

At that age, loads of kids will make loads of mistakes and they'll all be used to being corrected ("lellow" "radigator" etc). They're almost certainly not highlighting your child or ridiculing.

I don’t know really; I’d probably leave it mostly but if it went on and on I might say something like:

“Don’t worry - she knows how it’s supposed to sound but her mouth needs to practice moving the right way.”
