Can I use these dressings with Emla cream?

FFS

Toddler twins having blood tests at hospital at 8:30am tomorrow. They suggested we get Emla cream from GP surgery so we didn’t have to arrive at 7:45

GP surgery have messed about and they still haven’t sorted the prescription so I sent DH to buy some cream and the dressings to go over it. Just looked at them and they’ve sold him these rather than the clear plastic ones.

Can I use them or will they just soak the cream up?

DH can’t get back there before they close, I’m really unwell (waiting on GP to call with some test results to see if I need to go to hospital myself) so can’t go.

If these won’t work, any ideas?

Can I use these dressings with Emla cream?

Put cling film over the absorbent pad and stick them on

Good plan. Thanks!

I'd imagine they would just be using EMLA cream to actually stick the needle in so that they don't feel it. Emla is just for numbing it wont be left on long term. I'm guessing the dressing is just to go in top once they are done.
Pretty strange they are not supplying a little spot plaster at the hospital though!

You can just tape some clingfilm on instead of a dressing

SinkGirl · 24/07/2019 17:11

the clear dressing is meant to go over the cream when you apply it as it has to be left on for 45 mins. Because the test is so early they suggested we apply the cream ourselves at home an hour before the appointment

Yep cling film instead of a dressing. Works a treat!

SinkGirl · 24/07/2019 17:12

Thanks, I’ll try to concoct something with the dressings and clingfilm

@jent13c you’ve got the wrong end of the stick.

A dressing is needed after applying Emla to hold it against the skin. Usually a film dressing is needed as anything with a pad will absorb some of the cream so it may be less effective.

I’d just use clingfilm @SinkGirl, you could always cut a square of clingfilm to go over the area you’ve Emla’d and then put those dressings over the top.

Jent13c · 24/07/2019 17:14

Ignore me...obviously it's used a bit differently on the wards when I've used it! Just read the instructions.

SinkGirl · 24/07/2019 17:15

Yeah. I don’t have any tape that will stick to their skin and otherwise they’ll just pull it off, so I’ll use these (ridiculously large) dressings with clingfilm underneath.

Honestly this is why I try not to delegate things - surely people working in a pharmacy know what sort of dressings you need for Emla cream? I should have given DH more specific info obviously!
