Do you shut all your windows in a thunderstorm?

FairfaxAikman · 24/07/2019 10:08

DF thinks I'm mad for getting up at 2am to shut all the windows once a thunderstorm started here.
He thinks there is no danger in leaving the windows open when it was so hot last night.
I admit the risk is low but think it's still electricity and you don't fuck about with electricity.

WWYD?

If lightening was to strike I don’t think windows being open would make much difference surely?

There was no way I was shutting windows last night

Sparklingbrook · 24/07/2019 10:09

Left all mine open, what happens if the storm doesn't wake you up to close them?
What's the risk?

KnifeAngel · 24/07/2019 10:09

No never. How can it get in an open window?

GrammarTeacher · 24/07/2019 10:11

Why would you? Was glorious hearing and smelling the rain in last night's storms.

Skinnychip · 24/07/2019 10:13

I closed ours as it was raining so hard and i didnt want stuff on the windowsill to get soaked....and then opened them after it finished....closed again for 2nd storm, opened again when that was over!!! It was only because of the rain rather than lightning

GreenTulips · 24/07/2019 10:16

I love the freshness of a thunderstorm and actively open the windows to left the air in!

Blueuggboots · 24/07/2019 10:19

What are your thought processes around shutting the windows?
Someone I used to know wouldn't touch taps if there was a thunderstorm.
My mum used to make us turn the TV off....

bloodywhitecat · 24/07/2019 10:20

I am more 'worried' about the aerial on the chimney stack than I am about open windows, but then we have tall trees in the garden too so open windows don't even cross my mind.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 24/07/2019 10:22

I closed ours upstairs because they're velux ones and the rain was coming in. It was not a pleasant night's sleep...

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 24/07/2019 10:22

WTF? Electricity isn't just floating round in the air like bits of dandelion fluff.

And if lightning did happen to directly strike the window, not sure a bit of double glazing is going to be much use.

Blackcountrychik83 · 24/07/2019 10:23

I shut ours because of the rain, we have huge double height windows and have been caught out a few times by the rain soaking everything inside.

probstimeforanewname · 24/07/2019 10:26

I am not worried about windows being open but did unplug a few things like mobile phone and laptop so they wouldn't get fried if there was a power surge.

My mum used to always unplug the TV from the aerial, but we have cable.

crazycurry · 24/07/2019 10:28

No, mainly because I slept right through it. If I'd been awake I'd have done it if the rain had been coming in.

Picklypickles · 24/07/2019 10:29

Yes I shut the bedroom window when it started pouring with rain, thought process was "rain will come in the window and make everything wet". I opened it again when the rain passed!

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 24/07/2019 10:30

That's odd. What's the thinking behind it? Is it some silly old wives tale? My MIL won't let our kids have chocolate milkshake because chocolate milk causes diahorrea (it doesn't) and an ex neighbour wouldn't allow her kids to drink milk on hot days because it would, apparently, curdle in their stomachs. Hmm
We weren't allowed to use the phone when I was a kid during a thunderstorm.
We had our bedroom window open last night and the only thing I was worried about was bugs coming in because it's been bug heaven here in our area lately. Bloody Scottish midges are evil!

PetrichorRain · 24/07/2019 10:33

We didn't and it turned out the gutter above DS's room is blocked so we had a waterfall into his room.

MoistOwlette · 24/07/2019 10:33

I fling them open!!

Luckingfovely · 24/07/2019 10:45

Whaaaaaaat? This is funny! Of course not, why on earth would you? Unless it's raining horizontally into the room of course.

Saucery · 24/07/2019 10:46

Ball Lightning can come in iirc. But only if it has a straight path in and it’s very rare.

BouleBaker · 24/07/2019 10:48

I don’t think closing the windows will have any effect on the lightning.

Clutterbugsmum · 24/07/2019 10:49

Only the big ones, so the rain doesn't come in.

LolaSmiles · 24/07/2019 10:53

I close side opening ones (but leave the higher bottom opening small ones) because I don't want the rain coming in.

Doing it because of electricity is a new one to me.

Pinktinker · 24/07/2019 10:54

My DH did purely because of the noise, the storm seemed ridiculously close. I couldn’t deal with it being closed though and reopened it.

elQuintoConyo · 24/07/2019 10:54

Only to prevent the rain coming in. The wind here picks up incredibly and things would be blown all over the house, not to mention banging windows.

Whisky2014 · 24/07/2019 10:55

I did at 4am this morning.
