Flies in the house

Hi everyone, this has probably been done before, but what is the best way to get rid of the flies from my house, I have an 11 month old dog, so can't use sprays. Thank you in advance

I wish I knew. Can't keep windows closed, they're attracted by just about everything it seems.

Pinktinker · 24/07/2019 11:54

I don’t think there is a way really, it’s just an annoying part of summer.

My DD has had a phobia of any flying insect since she was two so I’ve had to deal with her screaming constantly during summer for the past six years. Fun.

We have just moved and are having to keep the windows closed till about 6pm. As soon as we open them before that the house is swarmed with thunderbugs! I made the mistake of opening the back door and upstairs windows yesterday and with in seconds every where was covered.

RatherBeRiding · 24/07/2019 12:00

Fly swatter or fly papers I'm afraid. It's a nightmare. My house is full of them. Angry

MoltenMountain · 24/07/2019 12:03

Stop them coming in! After our first summer in our new place we installed mosquito nets on the bedroom and bathroom windows. Also kitchen and terrace. We only have those windows open. And maybe get one or two flies a year when the DC forget to shut the terrace one.
Best money we ever spent on the house.

We have terrible problems with flies, but, apart from swatting and spraying, I find having more windows open helps so they have more exits. I am also careful not to leave anything remotely attractive to them out.
Last summer on a very hot day, I was doing a large casserole (as a batch cook) in my slow cooker for my fil. Never again. As soon as it began to smell like a delicious meal, all the green and blue bottles came in and were swarming over the slow cooker like it was a dead animal. Horrified, I relocated it in my study, and shut the door and windows. When I went back in some time later, I couldn't believe it - there were some flies around. They had actually crawled in through the trickle vent. I looked outside and there were hundreds of them queuing up to climb through. Aargh! Obviously I shut the vent and dealt with the flies, but, really, talk about persistent. (Just to reassure you, no flies could actually get in to the slow cooker...and my study stank of stew for days).

I have one of those old fashioned beaded curtain at the back door and try to keep windows and curtains closed during the day to keep the house cool. The beaded curtain has reduced the number of flies I get considerably. to none

Mummoomoocow · 24/07/2019 12:34

I bought insect nets with Velcro tape to attach to the window frames and balcony door. You don’t need expensive ones, they’re exactly the same thing at 97p or £12 on Amazon. No bugs, windows open all the time. Originally bought to keep spiders out Angry hate spiders

HairyDogsInUnusualPlaces · 24/07/2019 12:39

This year i bought one of those uv light electrocuters. It gives me so much pleasure when i hear the 'CRACK' of another fly being fried.Grin
I'm out in the country with front and back doors open, fly killer on and there's only the odd fly in here that hasn't succumbed to the light (yet).

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 24/07/2019 13:32

Thank you, might have to convince DH to get the nets, for some reason they like to circle round the middle of my living room, so they keep flying in to my head as I'm walking through to hang my washing out in the garden! then we get the daddy long legs in the evening just constantly flying in to our foreheads when relaxing 🤬🤯 other than that, they don't bother me. Oh and my 11 month old Cockerpoo, jumps out of her skin if a fly dared land on her 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

@longearedbat Grin could just imagine your DP asking why the sultanas are so crunchy 🤣 and wow at the flies lining up to get in the house! Determination or what?! X

Flies used to circle around the central light in my dining room until I got the dreaded beaded curtain. Now I have no circling flies Grin

An old wives' trick is to put a penny or 2p in a sandwich bag half filled with water and hang that from the door/window frames. It is supposed to look like a giant eye or something to the flies and frightens them off.
Make sure it's a strong bag and that the fittings are strong too.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 24/07/2019 14:06

And why, when there is one open window next to a non opening window, do they continuously fly head first buzz, buzz, buzz into the closed side instead of flying out of the open window THAT IS RIGHT NEXT TO IT????? Twats, the lot of ‘em.

Soubriquet · 24/07/2019 14:11

We don’t have as many flies as we used to.... my dogs love to play with them and kill them Grin

Though it’s a bit scary when the fly buzzes near you and all you see can see is teeth Angry

Big girl loves to catch them...and little girl is watching and learning too
