Quick sense check - should DH be feeling better after 24h on antiBs?

DH got an infection from a small cut on his toe about 10 days ago. It became worse and had red lines coming out, so he rang GP who prescribed Flucloxacillin (sp?).

Took that and the infection mostly got better but not 100%. Then started getting weird rashes and giant blisters (!) on the soles of his feet.

Rang GP again who said allergic reaction - stop taking the antibiotics - take an OTC antihistamine if you like but should all be okay now.

Only, it wasn't. Infection came back with chills and fever so last night OOH GP presribed non-penicillin antiBs. DH has been taking these new antiBs for 24 h plus painkillers....

....but he is still chilly, minor temp of around 38.5, lethargic and won't eat, pallid. Should I be worried or does he just need a good night's sleep?

How is his breathing? Can you measure full breaths per minute? When he is not looking?

TheInebriati · 23/07/2019 21:15

As he is lethargic, pallid and cool, I'd get him to A&E. Phone 111 if you aren't sure.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 23/07/2019 21:23

Purple his breathing seems okay. Haven't measured breaths but doesn't seem unusual.

He is adamant a decent night will sort him out and he is going to work tomorrow.

This is also the man who took 10 years to get his enlarged prostate checked 🙄

Is his skin clammy?

FaithInfinity · 23/07/2019 21:29

Well...I’d say a temp of 38.5 isn’t minor (and I’m a nurse!). 38.6+ is usually viewed as an emergency! I would usually expect some improvement after 24 hours on antibiotics.
I’d call 111 and ask what the best course of action should be, they might be able to arrange an OOH appointment rather than him go to A&E.

PurpleWithRed · 23/07/2019 21:29

I'm with the 111 suggestion.

AlwaysCheddar · 23/07/2019 21:30

I’d go toA&E definitely.

PeoniesarePink · 23/07/2019 21:30

Antibiotics don't normally work for a good 48 hours when you're taking them orally. If you're worried I'd phone 111 though - you don't want to risk sepsis.

Itwasntme101 · 23/07/2019 21:30

I'd call 111 at least OP.

Teacakeandalatte · 23/07/2019 21:31

It does sound a bit worrying I think you should ring 111 too.

Graphista · 23/07/2019 21:32

Borderline - but that temp is high and an ongoing infection like this can turn into something worrying.

111 I'd say

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 23/07/2019 22:03

Right DH has now gone to sleep. I am trying to work out if it's worth waking him for.

To touch, I would say he is less hot and shivery than an hour ago.

I think I will reassess in an hour and then make a call on ringing 111 or not.

yes keep an eye on it definitely = heartbeat/breathing

FaithInfinity · 24/07/2019 07:51

How is he this morning Johnny?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 24/07/2019 13:58

Hi! Thanks for checking back faith

I rang 111 last night and they said the would get a dr to call back, but no one did till 5am by which time I was so exhausted I fell asleep through the phone ringing!

DH too poorly to go to work today so has rung our own surgery who have given him an emergency appt this afternoon.

It now emerges that fever, chills etc are actually side effects of Clarithromycin (or however you spell it) which is the new antiB he is on. It says on the leaflet they are 'serious side effects' and you should see a dr right away if you get them. I hope he is not having another allergic reaction Confused

Has he had any accidents recently?

I have been experiencing even more issues than previously with side effects/allergies to meds since my car accident.

Another mner and I were discussing the issue by pm. There are rare/newly being researched possible reasons for this.,
