Could I sound out a business idea to you ?

Sooo... I have a wedding/birthday cake business. Thinking about some ideas to sell over the holidays I revisited an idea I had last year and never did anything with - a baking party in a box. This is slightly adapted to a "Bakebox" to entertain your child.
The premise is that your box would contain all the dry ingredients to make the dough, icing, colouring, cutters or nozzles, piping bags etc. Plus a link to a YouTube video which talks them through every step or a printed pictorial sheet. The idea being that when your little cherub says "I'm bored" you could just give them the box and they can get on with it with minimal input from the parent. It also wouldn't require to much in the way of skills. I've trialled a couple of ideas getting DD9 to make them from scratch (although not from picture instructions yet).
would anyone purchase that (it would just be for local delivery as I'm just a one woman band) and if you think it's a goer but have some suggestions how it could work better, pls do say

If it's not allowed to post this sort of thing then pls could you report 😀

Sounds a lot like the packet fairy cakes you can buy in supermarkets for less than two quid to be honest. Sorry OP.

Oh and I forgot the biggest plus side.. once finished you would be able to enjoy their lovingly created lion/Dinosaur/pirate/mermaid/insert biscuit of choice

I see it has potential. Capitalise on people's need to show off on social media by providing all the prepared ingredients. It's similar to the meal in a box businesses. Go for it.

I think you should try it and see where it goes :)

I wouldn't personally try something like this yet, but my child is under 2 so obviously needs a lot of help and oversight from me when we do baking together (well really I do most of it at this point with her help), but if she was older I think it would be fun to let her try baking more independently.

I remember doing some baking kits when younger with my sister who was a bit younger. Harry Potter biscuits being the most memorable.

Good luck i hope it works out really well!

Local lady here runs 2/3hour kids tutorial on cake making and decorating

I think £15 per child

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 23/07/2019 20:09

There is a lady who does kids baking classes round here (maybe you’re her! Grin) and sells other sorts of cakes stuff and I think if she marketed this it would absolutely sell (at the right price)

Di11y · 23/07/2019 20:12

I like it if it included piping bags and nozzles, I see cool stuff and can't replicate because I don't have the kit.

Nordicwannabe · 23/07/2019 21:30

Be aware that children’s baking subscription boxes do already exist. A friend has recommended BKD mini bakers club which has a themed baking project and craft activity.

AtSea1979 · 23/07/2019 21:34

It sounds like a good idea. But whether I could justify the cost is another matter. I think as others said that a kids baking class would be better. There’s nothing like that here and I would be interested in that.

Pipandmum · 23/07/2019 21:35

But I wouldn’t want to buy it a second time if I already had the nozzles etc from the first one. Once I already had that kit I could just buy a cake mix and frosting. You’d have to something different for a repurchase. Repeat custom is key.

boosterrooster · 23/07/2019 21:47

I think it's a great idea and would definitely buy for my nieces for when we have sleepovers. They would love opening a box with all the bits and pieces and getting stuck in. As per someone else's suggestion, I'd include the piping bags/ other accessories where applicable. Or something like disposable kids aprons (if such a thing exists?) as a little extra?

Do you make cake pops? I saw them on Pinterest a few years back and thought they'd take over from cupcakes as the "it" party treat but rarely see them on sale. Kids would love making those too I'd imagine

Blankiefan · 23/07/2019 22:03

I wouldn't buy it , sorry. I'd rather buy the ingredients and make sure she could follow a normal recipe.

How about running birthday party activities? Like Junior Bake Off or cupcake decorating? If you could prove a business model locally to where you live, you could franchise it and make some actual money. Round here, people are always looking for the next birthday party idea that the kids haven't done to death yet.

No, I don't make them for customers. They are a right faff and hence not very cost effective
