Window cleaning

Hi all I'm a window cleaner near wakefield (north east) and I'm just wandering what you all think makes a window cleaner good.

I'm doing this purely for market research to see if things can be done differently. So in your opinion what's makes a window cleaner a good one, do you enjoy having conversations with your window cleaners? Also how do you prefer to find a window cleaner? Do you like the window cleaner to post at your door so you can call and find out more info or do you like to be greeted at the door, Facebook ads or do signs and banners get your attention?

All feedback is greatly appreciated, thank you

Advertising by leaflet is fine, cold calling isn’t.

Advertising on Facebook is a good idea as people can leave reviews.

Once hired, I wouldn’t want to make conversation other than a polite greeting.

A good window cleaner is one that that turns up on time and let’s you know well in advance if he’s going to miss a time such as going away etc.

I would also expect to see the same person I hired and not his mate or brother in law etc

My window cleaner shows up whenever he wants with no prior warning, refuses to wash the upstairs windows (doesn't like ladders he said), bangs on the door when he wants to be paid despite the note that says please don't knock & being told face to face many times that we are usually sleeping due to night shifts. If he let us know he was coming we'd leave cash on the porch for him! Oh, & he also became our window cleaner by just turning up one day and washing our windows. I was sitting on the sofa breastfeeding the baby and all of a sudden there was a strange man stood there with a squeegee! I've tried letting him go several times over the years but it never sticks, he just keeps coming back (& I'm a mug that keeps paying him...).

So if you are the total opposite of my window cleaner then you'll be great.

Agree with first poster.

Also when I hired mine I told him reason I fired the last one and it was because he climbed over our fence to reach the neighbours instead of walking round. He agreed this wasn't on and then I caught one of his lads doing the same thing.

There's a good network called Nextdoor where I found mine, he is great - always on time or texts to change time, friendly but not too friendly.

AbsolCatly · 23/07/2019 21:48

Friendly but not overly familiar
Cleans windows and frames!
Offers a gutter clearing service as well

MsMarvellous · 23/07/2019 21:52

Just don't hammer on my door for a prolonged period in an evening until I give in and answer to find you high as a kite demanding money from me when you haven't cleaned my windows for a year because I fired you for turning up drunk.

Do be like my new window cleaner who is polite, well mannered, and lets me pay by direct debit so I don't have to be in for him to get his payment. The brothers who do it now are great.

Happynow001 · 24/07/2019 05:39

No cold calling. Leaflets through the door - fine.
No knocking on my door, windows or ringing my doorbell
Please reduce crashing about with ladders early morning, waking me and possibly upsetting my neighbours
Turn up when/as agreed or text me if a problem has arisen and you can't come
Let me have your bank details so I can transfer payment to you
Do a good job - and I'll recommend you!

DontTalkBloodyDaft · 24/07/2019 06:58

A bucket of clean hot water before you start.
Clean the frames too.
Clean glass in external doors.
Don't miss Windows when there is no one home, or when you think there isn't.
Mind where you put your feet and don't trample on the plants/flowers.
Pick an evening to collect your money and stick to it.

I got rid of my window cleaner for all of the above.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/07/2019 08:16

I'd like mine to stick to a regular slot. I padlock the back gate so he climbs over. If he stuck to a regular day then I could leave it unlocked that day.

It's got easier since he started accepting payment by Penpal. (Paying by cash was tricky when I never knew when to expect him, and either didn't have cash or wasn't in. Now he justs puts a note thru the door.)

It really pisses me off when he doesn't turn off the outside water tap properly. (It leaks so it's a massive waste of water.)

I inherited him when I moved in, so not sure how I'd source a new one. Leaflet thru door would be good, or I'd ask a neighbour or look online.

babysharkah · 24/07/2019 08:39

We inherited our window cleaners when we moved in. They do a good job but I never know when they are going to turn up.

ems137 · 24/07/2019 08:54

I'm in Wakefield, not the north east though so maybe there's another Wakefield in uk?

I got rid of my last window cleaner for not always doing all the windows. There's a couple of windows that he never used to do but I'd see him doing the same ones on the neighbours houses. He also never used to do the whole back of the house if the back gate was shut (not locked).

They never came on the same day or date but they did make it very easy to pay them. They clean the windows and if they can see I'm not in they post a little slip through the door saying they've been. He puts his bank details on the slip so you can either transfer the money or he comes and knocks a couple of evenings later for the cash (not too late, maybe 5pm ish)
