What's everyone doing with their babies and toddlers in the hot weather?

It's forecast 32 degrees today with me and I'm trying to work out what to do with my 2 year old and 6 month old. They're both in just their nappies and grumpy even though all windows are open and fans are on. We were out all day yesterday and everyone got hot and tired. Half the toddler groups seem to have stopped for the summer. I'm thinking of putting them in paddling pool for a bit this afternoon but wondering what other people get up to to fill the day with their little ones in hot weather.

I'm at work today but thinking it will be the paddling pool! Maybe a picnic in the garden and then walk down to the shops and get them an ice lolly Smile

We are potty training so taking advantage of the hot weather to reduce the washing loads 😂 We played out in the garden early this morning when it wasn't too warm and hot. Later we'll probably stay inside and do drawing, puzzles etc as our garden has no shade.

My daughter is at nursery, they have fans on and paddling pool out

DS was at his dads yesterday who let him nap til 5pm so he didn’t get to sleep til 10pm last night and is the mother of bad moods. Coupled with the heat we’re not having a fun day so far. I’ve got the paddling pool set up but he’s having non of it.

RushianDisney · 23/07/2019 11:18

We went to the park really early to beat the heat, got very sandy and had a cool bath when we got home. We don't have a garden so the afternoon is going to be tricky

fitzbilly · 23/07/2019 11:23

Lots of water play outside, i have frozen toys in containers of water for them to play with and rescue the toys from.

When wet go out I soak their hats first in water and that keeps them cool. I also have a spray bottle of water and some wet flannels to hold/suck ( the baby loves this!!)

Apart from that, indoor play, park trip was at 8am before it got too hot, and loose cotton clothing.

Titsywoo · 23/07/2019 11:27

Just a tip - best to keep windows shut and curtains/blinds closed during the daytime or the house will get even hotter!

Louise0701 · 23/07/2019 11:31

All day in the garden. Lots of drinks snacks and sun cream, mine have been in the garden since 9am in and out of the pool as they please. We did the same yesterday. My toddler naps 12-3 so misses that part of the day and me and DD made dinner and watched a film while he napped. Then back into the garden til bedtime.
Loving this weather!

Either park early (before 10) or in evenings g 7-9ish. Then garden shade/pool inbetween. Today we are at soft play as it has aircin

FrappeLatte · 23/07/2019 11:38

We are staying indoors 🥵

QuestionableMouse · 23/07/2019 11:45

@Titsywoo depends on the house. Mine is stifling with all the windows closed but if I open them I get a nice draft which cools the house.

ememem84 · 23/07/2019 12:01

Ds is at nursery. They have the air con on full whack doors open and are doing lots of water play and might take the kids to the water fountains nearby for a splash. I’m currently not enjoying the heat. Am on mat leave. 39 weeks pregnant. Lying in bed blinds drawn windows open. With a cold. Ffs.

Chipsahoy · 23/07/2019 13:42

My baby is cutting back teeth and had a high temp, do bf and sweaty cuddles ugh.
If hoped to do paddling pool and toys out in the shade. Instead we are inside in front of the fan.

Minai · 23/07/2019 14:08

I have a 7 month old and a just turned 2 year old. We went out to the shops then the park first and thing this morning before it got too hot. They are both now napping and I’m planning to stay in this afternoon. They don’t do well in the heat and I’m not keen on it either. We will just do some indoor activities like play doh, reading books, cbeebies, maybe make some fairy cakes.

teenmum18 · 23/07/2019 14:12

My garden doesn't have a lot of shade so I bought a massive gazebo. I've put the pool underneath it and the sandpit my girls are having a great time.

Veryouting123 · 23/07/2019 14:12

We went to the park early and then shop for ice lollies!

They are now outside playing with the water table.

AnneLovesGilbert · 23/07/2019 14:13

Hiding indoors with curtains closed, windows open, fan on. Lots of short feeds and short naps. She’s coping better than I am, god I hate the heat.

Frith2013 · 23/07/2019 15:53

Don’t open the windows! Shut them and the curtains. It’s 24 degrees in my house, 33 degrees outside. (Old terraced cottage, no air con).

Frith2013 · 23/07/2019 15:55

A draught does not cool a house. Neither does a fan. The breeze on your skin cools you a bit.

A breeze on walls doesn’t cool them!

timeforawine · 23/07/2019 18:42

She is insisting on her blanket tonight Hmm hoping she falls asleep quickly so i can go in and remove it

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 23/07/2019 19:52

We went for a walk along the sea front and pier where there's a good strong breeze, parasol, buggy fan, plenty of water and a wet hat. Tomorrow we're going swimming

QuestionableMouse · 23/07/2019 22:43

@Frith2013

Please don't tell me that I don't know what cools my house. It is much cooler in my house with the windows open. Don't presume you know better than other people.
