Cot bumpers yes or no?

I read on the lullaby trust website not to use a cot bumper? What is everyone else's opinions? Are they safe or not?

I used an Airwrap one.

Wouldn't use a traditional padded one.

I thought conventional thinking was along the lines of they’ve never been truly proven to prevent injury and instead pose a risk. The NHS current guidelines do not recommend them.

It's a no for me.

No. They don't have any benefit and children have been killed by them. Even the airwrap type aren't safe because they can get their heads stuck sort of under it - between the edge of the wrapping and the cot bars - and suffocate/strangle.

Not worth it just to look nice.

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/07/2019 10:26

No. They are pointless and pose much more risk over any purpose they may serve.

GrapefruitIsGross · 23/07/2019 10:27

Absolutely not.

I’d rather deal with a bumped head or trapped arm or leg than accept the risk that comes with wrapping non breathable fabric around my baby’s sleeping area.

There is a Facebook page called Justice for Preston, led by a woman who’s little boy became tangled in his cot bumper and died. Having read her account of finding her son, there’s no way I’d go anywhere near them.

lostfrequencies · 23/07/2019 10:27

Definite no.

lozengeoflove · 23/07/2019 10:27

Most definitely no.
Why risk it?

Marmite27 · 23/07/2019 10:28

No way!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 23/07/2019 10:29

This ^^ The only purpose to a cot bumper is to make a cot look pretty. They are potentially very dangerous and serve no use for protecting children. Like socket covers, I'm baffled as to why anyone still uses them.

Mummaofmytribe · 23/07/2019 10:29

NO

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 23/07/2019 10:29

No. If the Lullaby Trust and the NHS say they're not safe, why would you?

NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten · 23/07/2019 10:33

Absolutely not.

There's no benefit to having them and there is a risk of injury and suffocation.

Why take that risk at all?

Damntheman · 23/07/2019 10:35

Nope not in a million years. It isn't worth the risk and they aren't really necessary.

mogtheexcellent · 23/07/2019 10:37

I had an airwrap one for 5yo DD. Not sure I would bother now.

MarthasGinYard · 23/07/2019 10:37

The airwrap certainly didn't look pretty....it stopped dummy rolling out and slightly softened a limb being bashed against bars but aesthetically pleasing. No.

This was about 10 years ago Op

Didn't realise that they were also unsafe type now.

Frazzlerock · 23/07/2019 10:38

No.

I've lost three babies in pregnancy the past three years and would do absolutely anything for a living baby that I get to see grow up. There is absolutely no way in hell I risk losing another child if I am lucky enough to have one now. Having a child who makes it through pregnancy is an enormous privilege and I wish people would stop taking that privilege for granted.

I don't even know why anyone would question it 😔

FlowerTink · 23/07/2019 10:39

Definitely not.

Search Justice For Preston on FB. The ladys story about what happened to her son has stuck with me. It's not worth the risk.

eurochick · 23/07/2019 10:41

Hell no. We had an air wrap when she was an older toddler and getting limbs caught in the bars. A bare cot when she was a baby.

Bobbiepin · 23/07/2019 10:41

What can a stranger on the internet say that is gonna make your mind up when you've read the official guidance?

If you're looking for someone to say it's fine because you want them and you want reassurance go for it but you know the risks.

OvalCanvas · 23/07/2019 10:42

No.

I used them with my older children as no safety concerns had been raised at that point. Fortunately they weren't harmed. My youngest doesn't have one , and if I knew then what I know now I would never have used them.

I'm disgusted that shops still sell them. John Lewis , I believe still sell them. It's disgraceful.

MissingTheMissletoe · 23/07/2019 10:42

Cot bumpers are brilliant if you want to put your baby’s life at risk.

Arlw · 23/07/2019 10:43

Thank you everyone, not worth it by the sounds of it. I got one given to me but wont be pitting it on. X
