Cloth nappy problem

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/07/2019 07:20

We recently switched to cloth nappies and DH is not impressed.
I am trying to do my bit for the environment but they don't seem to hold the wee very well so I bought some biodegradable liners but DD still wakes up smelling of wee every ,morning.
She only wears them at night as is potty trained in the day. DH is wanting to give up.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any tips?

Liners are just to stop poo smearing on nappies,so you can chuck it down the toilet more easily.
I don't know what you're using but either you need extra absorbency - so inserts of cloth to put in the crotch area, or it's leaking because the weight of wee is letting the crotch part fall down and creating a gap. I would get a Motherease nappy wrap to put round the whole thing and hold it in place, and then put extra pads in if necessary.
Look on Facebook for preloved nappy selling groups.

We are using all in one bambino’s. The liners say they are to keep the wee off skin?
I don’t want to spend loads more as she is almost four so should be coming out of them by Xmas!

I’ll get some extra pads.

Bambino Mios aren't really designed for wearing at night - in general they need changing every few hours. For night nappies most people use a two parter (an absorbent nappy and then a wrap) such as a tots bots bamboozle or a little lamb fitted nappy. When using these you put a fleece liner between the nappy and baby and that helps wick the wee away from their skin.

Oldraver · 23/07/2019 09:34

Use fleece liners, you don't have to buy, just get some fleece or old fleece clothing and cut up and use as a liner

ElstreeViaduct · 23/07/2019 09:59

I agree with littlehouse, I wouldn't choose a Bambino Mio for a toddler's overnight nappy and anyway I think it's a really difficult stage to switch to cloth. With an older child approaching being dry at night, the wee will be starting to get more concentrated overnight so it's not surprising it's smelly. Daytime with a toddler, or anytime with a baby, or even with some older bedwetters, there would be less concentrated, less smelly wee.

Yes get some absorbent boosters, maybe bamboo. A fleece liner is a good idea but you need enough absorbency behind it to draw the liquid away. Don't bother with disposable liners.

Honestly I would put her back in disposables. Pull-ups if they hold enough, so she can practice using the loo at night. I respect you for giving cloth a go but it is much easier with a younger baby.

Another thought is that if the nappies are not getting rinsed very well then the smell can build up and be released as soon as the nappy gets wet again. This is more of an issue in modern machines that use less water - we actually gave up on cloth when we got a new WM that just didn't rinse as well as our old one. The build up can be cured by lots of rinsing and stripping out the nappy, but environmentally you have to weigh all the extra washing just to save one nappy a night for a relatively short period of time.

Before buying them and that’s what was recommended. It’s so hard when none of the shops sell them so you can’t speak to people in person for advice.

BambinoMios won't work as an overnight nappy (I never got on with them as a daytime nappy on a baby either, they have very low absorbency). I have this problem with 3 yo DD, determined to cloth but it's such a hassle when she wants to go to the toilet after bed. We use bamboozles with a wrap and they are 100x more absorbent than what you're using. You can also get size 3 ones for slightly older children.

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/07/2019 10:34

Okay thanks. Do Bamboozles dry quick enough to just have one?

OP posts:
Turtlemam · 23/07/2019 10:47

No, they take a couple days to dry (when it's not a heatwave!)

moreismore · 23/07/2019 10:52

You could try emailing this lady www.thenappylady.co.uk/ she’s very helpful

LuckyKitty13 · 23/07/2019 11:08

I wash every other day, use bamboozles at night, and have 5. That's always enough. Occasionally baby poos as soon as night nappy us on, so we can use two in one night. That's why you need spare.

Emelene · 23/07/2019 11:10

I second the Nappy Lady, very helpful and she has a Facebook group which is great.

We use bambino mios with a booster (bamboo little lambs) and can only get 3 hours reliably without leaks, they aren't built as night nappies.

If you do decide to change nappies you will probably be able to sell the bambino mios for quite a good price, there are Facebook groups for this.

Good luck!

ElstreeViaduct · 23/07/2019 11:27

I'm a bit surprised we don't have a cloth nappy & reusable cloth pad area on MN. Maybe it would be too hard to tell genuine advice from spam - this is always the problem with online recommendations. Or maybe we do have one, and I just haven't looked for it.

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/07/2019 11:44

Thanks ladies.

Sadly Bambino Mios are generally rubbish and very few people can get more than age whkjrs wear of them. Even more sadly they pump so much money into marketing so that's where most people start with cloth and then become discouraged Sad.

For night nappies, I would recommend a two part system (Little Lamb fitted nappy plus a waterproof wrap is literally bomb proof). Baba+Boo with 3 boosters are also very good and last us a whole night with no leaks. These are my go to night nappies for my chunky 15 months old

MammaBear18 · 23/07/2019 11:48

Sorry for weird autocorrect!

Meant to say 'very few people can get more than a few hours of them'

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/07/2019 11:58

I am a bit disheartened Mammabear. We don't have much money to throw away and part of my reasoning was that it wouldn't save us much as she is almost 4, but it wouldn't cost us any more and would be better for the environment. We can't afford to keep trying different ones and we can't afford to buy more than 2/3. So if they take ages to dry, they are no good for us.

ElstreeViaduct · 23/07/2019 12:00

It's so nice to hear Little Lambs are still going strong. They were my first favourite nappy on newborn DD, who's now 12.

MissMooMoo · 23/07/2019 12:20

Ones that take ages to dry are the ones you want,it means they hold lots of liquid!
Bambino mios didnt work for my son after about 10 months, even when boosted.
You need a nappy where the absorbent pad is bamboo or even better is one with hemp.

You should look to see if you have a cloth nappy library locally. They will be able to advise and might even have night nappies you can try out before you commit to buying any.

WhatTheAbsoluteFuck · 23/07/2019 12:21

Micro fibre nappies are useless IMO.

Prefolds and bamboo boosters all the way here, prefolds from eBay and boosters from Little Lamb.

WhatTheAbsoluteFuck · 23/07/2019 12:23

With either Tots Bots wraps or BumGenius Flip wraps.

Bamboozles also great for night time.

gigglingHyena · 23/07/2019 16:44

Having tried several types over they year I found old fashioned Terry squares to be one of the most absorbent options, and quickly drying. Once you get the knack, folding them really isn't that much of a faff. Fasten with a nappy nippa.

A Terry square and hemp booster lasted mine overnight.

You might also look at bedwetting pants, mothease do some and I'm sure there are others too. Makes it easy when they are ready to take themselves to the loo in the morning.
