As above. We were planning to go to Fountains Abbey, but it is going to be over 30 degrees(Thursday), so looking for somewhere with water. We have three children age 8,5 and 1. Preferably somewhere beautiful(but not essential). I have seen the river paddling at Bolton Priory. It looks amazing, but is too far off route. Unfortunately I have read that you cannot swim/paddle at Fountains Abbey.
I have asked for travel tips on mumsnet before, with some brilliant results. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to respond.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park? Amazing place, loads to see and a great restaurant. Not sure how near it is to the A1 though

Newby hall is perfect. Thank you so much.

Newby Hall is great for a proper stop. Forbidden Corner is great too but it's a bit of a drive and a place you stay for a while.

Richmond is nice and not far from Scotch Corner, walk down to the river and have a little paddle and skim some stones. Aysgarth Fall is lovely too.

Winifredgoose · 22/07/2019 20:27

Will look at ysp too. Thanks.

Yes Newby Hall and the kids can play in the water fountains. The ice cream stall is helpfully only fifty yards from said water fountains.

Winifredgoose · 22/07/2019 20:30

Will look at all suggestions. Newby Hall looks like a great day out/location. It also means we can still go to the nice Chinese I'd seen in Ripon afterwards! Thanks all.

It's actually quicker to take the M6 we found. A1 is slow.

Go to the Studley Roger end of fountains Abbey and walk round the lake to the seven bridges walk. Lovely stream to paddle in.

Newby also lovely.

Nice riverside pubs at West Tanfield or Newton on ouse but no paddling.

Free to go to Hackfall woods, great shady woods, follies, river to paddle, pub in Grewelthorpe.

Have a good trip!

@winifredgoose which Chinese?

I'm a big fan of Bambudda.

Also Ripon has lovely shady river walk. Park Skellgate/borrage lane and there's a park with huge paddling pool next to the river, walk along to Williamson Gardens and hell Wath nature reserve.

Burghley House, Stamford, Lincolnshire- just off the A1 near Peterborough. The Gardens Of Surprise are a series of water fountains and your little ones are guaranteed a good soaking. Book online and you can reuse the tickets on the way back.

BikeRunSki · 22/07/2019 22:08

YSP is lovely, but a hike from the A1 and no water to paddle in.

Winifredgoose · 23/07/2019 06:59

Thanks all. Yes, it was Bambudda.

In South Yorkshire Magna is worth considering. It’s not a pretty place like others suggested as it’s an industrial museum in an old steel works but the water play area is great and the building itself is cavernous and cool on a hot day.
