If you are a nurse, what is the best thing about nursing?

I am starting down the road to becoming a nurse (LD branch). Because of my personal circumstances it will be a longer route.

So to keep me motivated, and keep me feeling positive, can yo share the best thing about nursing. Then I can save it and look back over it when I am feeling demotivated.

The people I work with. They are some of my best friends and favourite people!

"Thank you, you've made such a difference" - part of the job you get all the time and it feels so good.

ParrotsForLife · 22/07/2019 10:28

Oh god so much.
Smiles on my patients faces, getting to be kind to people always makes me happy inside.
Getting a tricky wound to heal up.
Sorting out someone’s meds so they’re in control.
Knowing I keep people at home and out of hospital.
Getting cuddles of squishy little babies and high fives off toddlers.
Using my brain, my skills and knowledge to improve people’s situations.
I love my job, yeah it’s got down sides, but I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Making a difference to people's lives.

Also, my patients are amazing (they are babies and young children) and I work with a great team of people.
Nursing is really hard and there are lots of negatives, but it can also be a great job. There will be good days when you really make a difference to someone and remember why you do it.

Thank you :)

Waving a long term patient out of the unit. I work in Critical Care so to get them there it’s often a long and bumpy road for them

I’m a palliative care nurse and I LOVE it. I couldn’t think of a better job. Giving someone the care and dignity they deserve at the end of their life is a privilege second to none.
I love the team I work with. I love that we all love our job. I love the families you grow close to while you’re caring for their relative/friend.
There’s a million and one things that make nursing the most rewarding job in the world. It’s just a shame it’s not reflected in the pay! But I don’t think anyone that goes in to nursing does it for the money.

Good luck!

The privilege of being allowed to care for someone when they are at their most vulnerable. And doing it to the best of my abilities.

Plus, I find people and their relationships endlessly fascinating.

Good luck!!

Good thread OP, I need motivation to stay in nursing. I work in mental health/LD too.

Building relationships with patients and seeing them discharged.
Flexible shifts available
Probably never be out of a job as the demand for nurses is high!

I work in ICU, I like to have patients who are really sick get better, slowly wean them off their drugs, get their tube out, get them up and walking again and then stepped down to HDU and then the ward. It’s hard though, really really hard and sometime they’re are more bad than good days but it usually always turns back around.

There are**

muddypuddled · 22/07/2019 18:54

Also an ICU nurse here. I love it that I have contributed to helping people get better from the worst situations and also building relationships with their family, some I can still call friends now log after their illness. There are sad times when the outcome isn't so good but even then I like to think that most of the time I can help the patient have a dignified ending to their life. I love my job!

LD nursing is so rewarding and complex, you will learn so much. You have the chance to make a real difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities. I did it for about 9 years, and I loved the people I got to meet and support. I gave it up a couple of years ago and I do miss that side of it but nothing else lol. The service users make it worth while Smile
