A list of jobs for the start of the school holidays...

2 of the dc are off tomorrow.
One is going out, the other hasn’t got any plans. I’m at work tomorrow and spoke to dd2 (who will be at home alone) and asked her if there’s anything she’d like to do.
She said she’d like to do a couple of jobs around the house to earn some extra pocket money (she’s saving up for some kind of console). I’ve agreed to this - a list of jobs - all optional - that have different prices attached and she can pick and choose which ones are worth it.
But I’ve I’ve only come up with about 3 jobs!
So far I have

  • organise shoe rack and area next to it (mainly some school stuff)
  • sort out Tupperware cupboard
  • clean and clear out the fridge

What else can I list that’s beneficial to me and will be something she wants to do?! I appreciate that you don’t know me/our house etc but do you have any annoying odd jobs you’d like someone to come and do for you?

I’m off from Wednesday by the way for the rest of the holidays so she’s not going to be spending every day at home like Cinderella and she has plans for other days, just tomorrow and possibly Tuesday. She does want to make dinner on Tuesday so I’ve bought the ingredients of what she wants to make.
She’s 14 if that helps!

Hanging around for ideas as I need them too!

I have doing the clothes washing on my list.
Washing up.
Cleaning and tidying room.
Making a list of anything needed for next term/year (ie. Pens, ruler...)
Cleaning back door step.
Watering garden (suspect this might not be needed!)

trinity0097 · 21/07/2019 22:52

Sort out clothes, bag up ones that are too small for the charity shop

CakeNinja · 21/07/2019 22:53

Forgot to say we have a cleaner so actual cleaning stuff isn’t required but I am adding returning a parcel to the post office to the list!
We just had the car cleaned (it gets done once a fortnight and was cleaned on Friday).
The shutters in the front room could actually do with a proper clean with hot soapy water, that’s going onto the list too.
The teens do their own washing anyway and do clean their own bathroom (cleaner obviously does this but I encourage them to do it in between the week same as I do mine).
Might add to reorganise ds’s bookshelf thing, the books and games are in a bit of a mess...
Thank you all, lots of good ideas here Flowers

My dc are going to be given a bag full of black socks and told to pair them and get them to the right owner.
They all wear black socks for school. They're all the same size. They all like slightly different variants of black socks, and then we've a few rogue pairs. They also all have a horrible habit of only putting one of a pair in the wash.

So upstairs on the landing we have about 50 odd socks that they will be tasked to pairing up as much as possible.

Change beds
Meal prep for dinner
Pick up small amount of groceries (I’m thinking corner shop, milk, bread etc)
Washing clothes and hanging out

ByeByeBike · 21/07/2019 23:02

My dc hate throwing stuff out even if they've outgrown it/never play with it/ have forgotten they own it.

My plan is to bribe them to clear out a lot of their wardrobes and toys and I would be more than willing to bribe them to part with their various collections of old toys they once got in a party bag in 2014, rocks they found on a beach 2 years ago, teddies that people gave them and now live in a box in their room, etc.

Frith2013 · 22/07/2019 05:32

In my house right now...

Washing/dusting all the lights and lampshades

Changing the beds

Tidying and hoovering under the stairs

Cleaning one room properly (woodwork etc included)

Putting stuff on EBay to sell (the most tedious job in the world!)

Cooking things for the freezer

RedSkyLastNight · 22/07/2019 09:19

If they are doing jobs because they want money, I personally would avoid things that would be expected as "normal" e.g. room tidying, meal prep, washing up as I wouldn't want to set an expectation that doing these things gets you money!

HairyMaclary · 22/07/2019 09:30

Gardening? We have a tedious weeding job that we have offered to put two (12 /14) for money.

NoIsACompleteAnswerSometimes · 22/07/2019 10:59

Kitchen cupboards- take all the plates, cups, saucepans etc out and clean the cupboard, get the crumbs out the cutlery drawer (where do they all come from?)

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/07/2019 13:14

Cleaning out kitchen drawers/cupboards
Taking winter duvets to laundrette for a clean
Taking winter coats to dry cleaners, winter boots to be re-soled
Cleaning inside of windows
Weeding in garden and/or mowing lawn
Washing the car
Ironing
Washing down skirting boards

CakeNinja · 22/07/2019 16:08

@RedSkyLastNight I’ve tried to avoid those things for that reason!
There are things they are just expected of them that need doing without financial reward and I don’t want to set an expectation that they will be paid for doing these things.
She’s earnt £13 today, she has just brought all the shopping in and unpacked it all without being asked so I’ve rounded it up to £15. The shopping is something she usually helps me with if she’s around when it’s delivered but I’ve come home with a bad back and she just got on with it.
Some friends popped round to see her this afternoon and she’s had a good day - everyone’s a winner!
