As we have the threads about parents jobs , what about parents education

I think one has a degree and one left school at 16.

My mum - degree, my dad - failed 11+ but later went to teaching college. Diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult. Both DPs parents went to uni.

Frogsandsheep · 21/07/2019 18:11

Both left school at 15 with no qualifications.

Weebarra kids from low income families can still go to uni nowadays. They get full loans and often generous bursaries.

It’s often the kids from middle income families whose parents can’t/don’t top up the loan, who have the hardest time financially.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/07/2019 18:19

OhtheRoses A levels in 1978 would have probably put you in the top 20% though, even if you didn’t go to uni. I think something like 40% of kids get a degree now.

To be honest, my DD1 has a B at English A level and a 2.1 in a creative subject and she’s a great girl, but not the sharpest tool in the box. I had school friends much brighter who never went beyond O levels.

mustbethecobblestones · 21/07/2019 18:32

Mum has a couple of city and guilds in catering .

Dad has a degree that he got as a mature student , distance learnt I think .

Sister has no qualifications apart from an Asdan thing .

I have a 2:1 in English literature , linguistics and language . Second person in my mum’s family to go to university . First in my father’s biological family . Wouldn’t have been able to go if not for the EMA I received in 5th and 6th year .

Comefromaway · 21/07/2019 18:33

My dad left school at 14 as his father was ill and couldn’t work so he had to

My mum was allowed to take O Levels & A Levels.

mustbethecobblestones · 21/07/2019 18:35

Grandparents :

Maternal grandfather was navy , grandmother was a teacher (college educated)

Parental grandparents not a clue - dad’s adoptive parents both highly educated , grandpa was a professor of computing science or something and grannie was a civil servant in a fairly high up role . They were very very influential in me going to uni as their parents were also very highly educated , they were wonderful in that respect .

Apolloanddaphne · 21/07/2019 18:41

Both my DPs left school at 16. DM did clerical work and DF was a painter and decorator.

My DM was determined me and DB would do well for ourselves and encouraged us in education.

I now have several degrees but DB wasn't academic. He did well in the Fire Brigade.

DM went to college as a mature student and trained to be a social worker. It was one of her proudest moments.

Both my DDs have now got degrees. It never crossed their minds that they wouldn't go to uni. In my extended family I think I am the only person who has been to uni. In DHs family they all have degrees.

lljkk · 21/07/2019 18:42

My grandfathers both had masters equiv. Uni degrees. One of my great grans got a tertiary degree back in 1870. My great-aunt got a PhD in about 1975 when she was 69yo... All outside the UK and apprenticeships not a 'thing'.

English DH's parents left school at 16 AFAIK.

Ellabella989 · 21/07/2019 18:44

Dad has a PhD
Mum has a MA

soulrunner · 21/07/2019 18:44

Both did A-levels in 1966. Working class backgrounds and were grammar school kids.

Dad: PhD
Mum: Undergrad degree and PGCE.

Pascha · 21/07/2019 18:51

Dad went straight from school at 16 into an accountancy apprenticeship in 1960. Mum trained as a hairdresser at local college.

FiL has no qualifications, he laboured and eventually started his own company. MiL left school at 15 with no qualifications and no prospects. She has only ever had casual labour jobs and been a sahm.

TinyMystery · 21/07/2019 18:53

My mum did A Levels but doesn't have a degree. My dad has a BA and went to teaching college - no idea if it was called a PGCE in the 70s though? I have a degree. Might do an MSc at some point but not in any hurry. My brother has a BA.

I know MIL had a place at university but was offered a job that she decided to take, and FIL did vocational study so probably has a diploma rather than a degree. DH has a BSc, his sisters have BAs and additional vocational qualifications.

My dad left school at 12, he was born in cyprus and think he was a bit of a tearaway. Worked for the British army before he came to uk. He was very intelligent but wasted. Suspect he would have bern gifted at maths if he had a proper education
My mum was 15, she was Grammar school but she had gefs+ and my DGM thought the stress of exams might bring on a convulsion, so she pulled her out of school and got her a job in the sawmills.

Proseccoagain · 21/07/2019 21:52

My DM was in care until 14 and then went to live with a family as a mother's help. DF probably left at about 12 (this would be about 1916), and was apprenticed to a saddler, a job he did until he retired.
I have a Teaching certificate, three years at college, in the days before you had to have a degree to teach. DH left school at 15 and worked his way up to being a highly qualified radio engineer and worked for an important government department.
DS has a degree in Aquatic Biology, and DD a degree in Politics.

CMOTDibbler · 21/07/2019 21:56

My mum did a teacher training diploma in the 60's, then eventually got a degree at 55. My dad left school at 14, no qualifications at all

Nordicwannabe · 21/07/2019 22:01

bumblingbovine49 that is heartbreaking. How did your DF move on from that situation in the end?

I watched the film Salaam Bombay as a teenager - where a similar-aged child ends up on the streets of Bombay after being sent away to work, and his one aim is to get back to his family - and it always stayed with me. I can't imagine how your father got over that.

BringOnTheScience · 21/07/2019 22:08

3 grandparents all left school at earliest opportunity. 1 did Teaching Certificate.

Dad did A levels then Teaching Certificate.
Mum did A levels (while 4 months pg with me ... great shame brought upon the family, blah, blah) then did her BA when I was at junior school.

I was the first in both families to go to Uni at 18. DH's family haven't had anyone go to uni. DC1 will be the first for them.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 21/07/2019 22:12

Both degree level educated. They were the first generation to get this, my grandparents were not educated beyond high school. My grandmother was considered bright enough for university but came from a poor mining family and had to leave and start working.

mindutopia · 21/07/2019 22:27

My dad had just secondary school and my mum did a college accounting qualification of some sort (she wasn’t an accountant but did some finance/accounts work for a big corporation). I have a PhD now, but I was the first person in my family to go to uni.

ScratchyMap · 22/07/2019 02:14

My mum has one O level. Not sure about my dad but he left school at 16.

Ornery · 22/07/2019 02:24

Mum has a CSE in bee keeping Confused neither has anything else. Dad delivered telegrams, then worked in a slaughterhouse. Mum worked in a grocer then a factory.

I have a first class degree and was commissioned into the military. Interesting experience.

Partridgeamongstthepigeons · 22/07/2019 03:34

Both grammar school educated in 1960s (working class/lower middle class backgrounds)

DM 1 O level and secretarial college. DF trained in professional quals at an ex Poly.

My siblings and I all degree level and post grad certs, all private school educated. 2 out of 3 of us poorer adult lifestyle than parents.
