Can anyone tell me what this plant is?

DH collected the seed from a plant at a stately home last year and has grown it on, but we don't know what it is. It is flowering now so that may help.

Can anyone help?

Some sort of rodgersia maybe?

Cailleach · 21/07/2019 13:13

The leaves remind me rather of an Acer tree...

It's Ricinus communis, aka the caster oil plant, and is VERY toxic! The seeds contain ricin, the poison used to Kill Russian dissident Georgi Markov with a poison-tipped umbrella. All parts of the plant are toxic, but especially the seeds. You might want to get rid of it fairly sharpish (very carefully).

@NanTheWiser

Thanks for that Nan! I'll let DH know. Just wondering what else he's picked up over the years!

Yes it’s poisonous, but it’s also a common bedding plant, found in lots of ‘tropical’ displays. Foxgloves are also poisonous, as are monkshood, but they are also common garden plants.

DinosApple · 21/07/2019 19:37

Thank you, yes we have a fair few poisonous plants in the garden, but it's always good to know what plants are.

Luckily the DC are too old to put random things in their mouths anymore!

We have lots in our garden (South facing, in Devon so quite 'tropical' feeling). It is toxic, but if you can resist munching on it, it's probably OK.

Rightsaidmabel · 21/07/2019 20:04

Please take this seriously. It is a castor oil plant and @NanTheWiser
has posted you a reply you should pay attention to.
No matter who blithely grows these elsewhere, do you want the responsibility of policing it?
The seeds are pretty speckled beans , they can look appealing to children!
Sorry to sound harsh, but I grew up where they were common, and know how serious the risk.

Yep castor plant!

While I am very laid-back about potentially poisonous plants ( at 72 I don't have children around), I really wouldn't want this plant in the garden, the risk is there. Actually, my late husband once grew it from seed, many years ago, but we weren't aware of its toxicity at the time.
