Go Henry or Nimbl ?

I am liking to set up my DC with prepaid cards for low level spending/saving. They are 7 and nearly 11. The older one will be starting middle school in September (unusual for England, but yes, in England. It’s Y6-Y8) and has done a transition week already.

From what I have read:
Nimbl - can be seen/managed via Parent pay app, which I use anyway.

  • Cheaper
  • cash withdrawals cost 49
  • have to be over 8 (if I decide this is the right card for us, then dd will just have to wait a couple of months).

Go Henry

  • more expensive to run
  • cash withdrawals free
  • no lower age limit
  • can add tasks/payment rewards

I’d appreciate any advice for or against either system, or any alternative. Could I just set them up a current account?

We have the Nimbl card for my 10 year old since he was 8. Had great reviews on MSE and at the time was only a fiver a year. Think it's gone up now though but still cheaper I believe than Go Henry. Had no issues at all, super easy to add money, block if needed, turn on or off ATM withdrawals (1 per month is free) and set limits. You get a notification instantly whenever the card is used which is great.

The thing is that now there are so many prepaid debit cards which are free and do the same things (Monzo, Revolut etc) which could be in your name but the kids can use it might be worth looking into one of those instead? The only difference is that it wouldn't have their name on the card?

Thanks@AllGoodDogs

I’d like them to have their own names in the cards. I think that’s part of them “owning” the responsibility and independence of controlling their own money to some extent.

Current account for the 11 year old.

Can't advise on the other, never saw it necessary until the bank did.
