Just wondered if he's backtracked on that pledge or does it look like he will go ahead with it if he becomes PM?

I think he's going to have face the reality of public finances when he gets into office.

And having a budget passed by Parliament......

Asdf12345 · 20/07/2019 20:10

I hope so, it will free up a good bit extra each month month for us to weather any brexit related price increases.

What public sector spending will you sacrifice to pay for it?
Because I think he's increasing spending on the NHS and education.
There's also a massive social care crisis looming.

I guess the Tories have abandoned austerity and debt worries now.

Or is it the magic money tree?

Id be better off and dont want it.

I think its become an "aspiration". I expect he will increase it a bit to not look entirely stupid.

YeOldeTrout · 20/07/2019 20:33

I reckon BJ will do this (anyway).
Even though It's very very bad optics. If the 2nd band tax threshold had risen with inflation it might be reasonable to reset at £60k or £65k, but not the £80k he proposed.

TanMateix · 20/07/2019 20:36

Well... it is Boris, there’s no point to predict what he will do. He doesn’t even know what he wants yet (or ver will do..)

pikapikachu · 20/07/2019 20:38

If he's going to spend half as much as he said he will (police etc) then he will have to raise tax. No Deal Brexit will mean that the poor will be hammered by the higher food prices so that leaves the rich really.

pepsimax20bigger · 20/07/2019 20:38

We'd be better off but don't want it either.

DragonTrainer3 · 20/07/2019 20:41

I wonder if he'll also sort out a pay rise and more money for the NHS, and cut stamp duty (he also hinted at these when he got in).

DragonTrainer3 · 20/07/2019 20:41

I suspect he'll conveniently forget...

Hirsutefirs · 20/07/2019 20:43

I’d be better off and I want it.

Living in Scotland, I don’t expect I’ll get it.

chomalungma · 20/07/2019 20:43

Well, he will be able to get more money in tax from those companies who sell kippers and now won't have to bother with the extra cost of having to put them in ice so they will make more money...

Hang on, there's something fishy about that...

Cinammoncake · 20/07/2019 20:46

Nobody knows what he will do. People think it's good that he's a 'loose cannon.' Just what the country needs right now apparently Hmm

Dickybow321 · 20/07/2019 21:24

Hirsutefirs what would be the situation in Scotland? I read an article explaining about the tax situation in Scotland but I didn't understand it Blush

Ilovetolurk · 20/07/2019 22:42

Boris if you’re reading this, crack on with it

Bourbonbiccy · 20/07/2019 23:09

He will say whatever he feels will be best received at the time, no one really knows what he will do when he gets in......including himself !!!

Hirsutefirs · 20/07/2019 23:09

Hey Dickeybow321- The Scottish Parliament sets income tax rates. They believe in taxing “the rich.”

Is Boris Johnson still going to raise the higher rate tax threshold ?
Dickybow321 · 20/07/2019 23:19

Thanks Hirsutefirs
So it's a different tax system and I'm guessing Scotland probably won't be included?

There was a magic money tree available for the precious bankers............

While they helped grow the general economy at some point, exactly where did that benefit go 🤷🏻‍♀️

Certainly not ordinary people.

So I would prefer that some of that magic money goes the way of the general population via health, social care and education spending.

Then we all benefit.

Kez200 · 21/07/2019 05:31

Im not entirely sure the bank saving didnt help us. If we had run on the banks, our money wouldn't have been there to withdraw. Who knows how bad that would have been.

I would stop the state subsidising social care as heavily and move towards an insurance supported health system closely aligned to the Republic of Ireland system. I don’t understand why we protect some classes asset from use paying for social care before the state steps in over others so fiercely.
