The NeverEnding Story

Obviously by the most recent series of Stranger Things. Who else thinks this is one of the most underrated films ever? Ive not seen it in years, but I watched over and over again as a child and loved it so much. It also has an amazing, pure cheese theme tune.

It deserves some love and I really need to see it again. Does anyone know if it's on Netflix? It has to be, surely?

I loved it as a child but found it so sad. And now i’ve got a wee boy of my own, I don’t dare watch it because I know i’d be a wreck.

The theme tune is the business though. My DSis went to see Giorgio Moroder and said that when this was performed everyone went off their heads Grin

Surely Netflix have to acquire it now! There must be thousands of people searching for it off the back of Stranger Things. I was grinning like an idiot when they sang the song.

My memory of the film is sitting in my cousin's bedroom with 7 other cousins watching it at Christmas time.

Just leaving this here for you all Grin www.simplemost.com/you-can-now-ride-falkor-from-the-neverending-story/

I adored it too: the sense of being safe from bullies and lost in a book, the magic of Bastian becoming vital to the story, Atreyu was attractive and free, Artax was sad, the wolf and those sphinx-like guardians were terrifying, the Nothing eating fantasia....it was really formative for me. I bought it on DVD to share with my children - early teens- which was too late, they mocked the special effects and thought the terrifying wolf was obviously a glove puppet etc. Don't repeat my mistake!

@MsRabbitRocks
She is called "Die kindliche Kaiserin" - the childlike empress
"Goldäugige Gebieterin der Wünsche" - the golden eyed master of wishes
"Mondenkind" - moon child - but more old fashioned because of 'Monden', which implies the moon phases, the passing of time and is more fairy tale like

PerkyPomPoms · 20/07/2019 10:22

The book was great, the film....bore no relation to the book, plus it’s only the first half of the book. Oh yes ladies, Bastien goes all sith lord on Moonchild!

I adored this as a child, I had it on VCR. My dc grew up with me telling them stories from it and I couldn't wait for them to watch it. They were Hmm about ten minutes into it I haven't quite forgiven them. When I first learned about salmonella in school my first thought went to Bastian's dad, who IIRC was making a milkshake thing with raw eggs?
My parents split up about 2 years after I started watching TNES and I never watched it again as a child. It holds extra special memories for me and I associate it with us all being together. I might try to make the dc watch it again.

Picklypickles · 20/07/2019 10:42

I did love the film when I was young and glad I watched it as it introduced me to the book which is sooo much better! Watching the film again after reading the book is very disappointing!

gotmychocolateimgood · 20/07/2019 11:16

Would it be too scary for a sensitive 8 year old and brave 5 year old?

AngeloMysterioso · 20/07/2019 12:05

@gotmychocolateimgood probably...

Ohnotanothernamechange · 20/07/2019 13:43

Yes, it's very dark isn't it for a children's film isn't it. Especially when the horse dies. But then I find that with a lot older children's films. They didn't shy away from bad stuff.

Ah thanks. I'll watch it myself instead of with them 🙂

My kids won’t watch it again as too scarred by artax dying. Us were raised on far worse films I guess so that was a doddle compred to that. (Still sobbed my eyes out)

MyLittlePetitPois · 20/07/2019 16:20

I used to love this film. I watched this wih my son when he was 5 and he was so upset when the horse died that I had to turn it off as he was sobbing.

PaganDee · 20/07/2019 17:01

I read the book, loved the film (still have it on DVD) loved the soundtrack. But yes when Artax dies, scarred me for life. But still an amazing film. For me my childhood was this film, labyrinth and the last unicorn.

PerkyPomPoms · 21/07/2019 01:14

Me too, and Watership Down - now that was a cheery wee film!

SweetMelodies · 21/07/2019 01:16

I always thought Atreyu was a girl when I was little!

The ‘swamp of sadness’ horse death scene was pretty drawn-out and traumatic for a kids movie.
