How do I make my home smell nice?

Givemestrengthorgin · 19/07/2019 20:16

I want my home to smell lovely without relying on candles. Something a bit more permanently smelly but the plug in type fragrances give me a headache. Any recommendations for home fragrance that is not a candle or a plug in?

Thank you.

I've recently discovered that sticking a small handful of lenor scented beads in my Henry filter works like a treat. When I hoover it smells lovely for ages!

Fresh air

Natural flowers

I like reed diffusers. The White Company so nice ones. They are expensive but last months and months.

Open windows whenever possible, change up your washing powder/ fabric softener often so you can smell them for an easy start. I use reed diffusers and I do like a bit of Zoflora but these are to individual tastes. I spray a bit of diluted Zoflora over rugs/ carpets before I go out and hoover them when I come back and that leaves a lingering smell.

I hoover up a bit of washing powder before I do the house And it makes the whole place smell clean

JoJoSM2 · 19/07/2019 20:25

The reed diffusers I had from the White Company were rubbish - barely any frangrance and didn’t last. I do find the ones from Zara to have a lot more umph and longevity.

I have two Lampes Berger and they are fantastic. They take all the smells away and the fragrances are lovely.

BelindasGleeTeam · 19/07/2019 20:32

I'm a big fan of the price's reed diffusers.

The fresh air one is lovely. As are some of the signature collection ones.

Th5ry last about 4-6 months too.

fiorentina · 19/07/2019 20:52

Opening windows a lot, lavender (or any other) essential oil in the hoover to smell fresh.

I sometimes use reed diffusers that smell ‘clean’ rather than fake and overscented.

In winter I wipe cleaning products or fabric conditioner on the radiator.

MidnightMystery · 19/07/2019 21:02

Zoflora everything!

ZootSuit · 19/07/2019 21:06

Reed diffusers are hit and miss but I’ve been using Next ones lately and they are lovely.
Also wax melts in a warmer - a plug in warmer rather than a tea light one so you don’t have to worry about the candle. Loads of choice of melts around, I love the US scentsationals ones from Asda, some of the Yankee ones are really nice too.

NaturalBornWoman · 19/07/2019 21:16

I've got an ultrasonic diffuser. You just put water and a few drops of essential oil into it and switch it on. No nasties and you can change up the oils depending on what you fancy.

TwigTheWonderKid · 19/07/2019 21:17

The Price's Open Window reed diffuser is fab. Also washing anything you can - sofa cushions & covers, curtains etc regularly will help get rid of any lingering stale smells.

Tronkmanton · 19/07/2019 21:18

Another vote for Next diffusers - they last forever.

growlingbear · 19/07/2019 21:23

I put a few drops of M&S diffuser oil onto a cotton wool ball in the hoover. Makes the house smell good every time you hoover. Lots of fresh air. If you can, wash your curtains and soft furnishings covers and add scented fabric conditioner to the rinse - that made my house smell fantastic for a couple of months. I was so surprised should have done it years ago Grin

DontCallMeShitley · 19/07/2019 21:24

If you get headaches with plug ins, you need to be careful with reed diffusers and pretty much anything that is made with similar ingredients.

Pure aromatherapy oil (not the cheaper diluted massage oil or scented oil) in an oil burner would be better, as long as you don't have allergies.

I also got terrible headaches with Zoflora, seems very toxic to me. Any of the fake perfume things make me feel ill and I had to recently leave a house where there were diffusers as I felt so bad.

One thing I can use are the Lidl gel fresheners (in white plastic thingies) but nothing else other than Neutradol and that is very strong.

unicornpoopoop · 19/07/2019 21:25

The fragrance floor. Amazing stuff

luckyorange · 19/07/2019 21:28

Opening windows and zeflora work for me but I also love the little Neutradol odour eliminators you can buy from supermarkets. They work great dotted around and I think they just leave a fresh smell...not too perfumey!

Mother87 · 19/07/2019 21:34

Chinese incense... the proper stuff that comes in big packs from the Chinese supermarket... just 1 or 2 sticks stuck in a plant pot/possibly near a door helping to waft the fragrance around... (it's not cloying/overpowering like some of the other exotic onesHmm) divine... visitors ALWAYS comment that my house smells 'beautiful'

Qwertyguerty · 19/07/2019 21:42

Don't go for fake fragrances, they will all eventually give you a headache.

Invest in a plug in diffuser and some essential oils. They might seem expensive for such small bottles but you only need 5-8 drops for a full water diffuser reservoir

My faves are frankincense, lavender (calming for evening), rose Otto, ylang ylang and jasmine, not mixed together though

They'll make your place smell divine and. Cause they are totally natural will not be headache inducing

dudsville · 19/07/2019 21:47

Of you live in an area where you can open your windows then do that for hours daily. Find a nice toilet cleaner and do that daily, a nice scent there lingers. Put soda crystals down your stains regularly. Vacuum regularly and clean. I have dogs and people always comment on how inviting my home is. I only use scent, a Reed diffuser in the main bathroom as a treat to myself, no one else likes it!

pusspuss9 · 19/07/2019 21:50

These fake fragrances are just cheap chemicals. You'd never dream of smothering yourself with perfume that cost 1p for a litre which is what these fake fragrances are .

How about fresh air and some natural smells - lavender, lemon, rosemary, pine branches...

LegionOfDoom · 19/07/2019 21:54

I have pets so it can get a bit whiffy sometimes. I keep the windows open all year round, for as much as the day as possible. I also Zoflora the floors. This massively helps. I also burn a Yankee candle was melt if anyone is coming over. They smell amazing and you can leave them in for a short time and then blow out. The fragrance lingers for ages

MissClareRemembers · 19/07/2019 22:06

Regularly deep cleaning upholsteries helps too. I find smells linger in the living room rug.

Reed diffusers are good but turn reeds every few days.

Light a good quality scented for at least an hour in the evening then close the door of the room at night. I find Jo Malone and White Company candles good (but very expensive).

Open windows, fresh bedding, clean drains, deep clean washing machine and dishwasher. Keep bins clean and empty regularly.

Wash pet beds frequently.
