Best before dates

What's the oldest out of date food item you have in your house that you are still happy to eat? Mine is a jar of marmite with a best before of Jan 17. It looks, smells and tastes completely normal so doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Tin of Birds Custard Powder. January 2008. It's fine.

I don't think Marmite ever goes off does it?

I usually have things years out of date because I buy lots of things that look nice with no real plans to use them. It's rare that anything in cans or jars actually goes off. I did throw some suet away that was about 18 months out of date and had gone rancid and I was quite surprised about that.

Just fucking well ignore all such dates. People have lost all ability to think for themselves, cook for themselves etc

And what's with those fucking ingredients boxes people buy, I mean what the fuck. Idiots the fucking lot of themAngry

Very appropriate user name.

@TrendyNorthLondonTeen context is everything. I doubt you are trendy either.😆

I've used suet that was four years over its date, to make dumplings. They were fine! Custard powder ditto. Unopened ketchup and salad cream, a year over. Yogurt, a week over. Eggs a few days over. Meat a day or two, but only if it smells fresh and hasn't started going grey. Preserved meat, such as saucisson sec, a week over if it's been in the fridge. Tomatoes two weeks. Lettuce up to three weeks if it's in good condition and not going brown. Milk a day or two, as long as it doesn't smell "on the turn".
I think my generation are used to judging food by eye and smell - we grew up long before use by dates were a thing. We're also more reluctant to waste food, if it can be safely eaten. We have turned leftovers into an art form....!
