Out of Date Salmon

Just want a quick yes or no oh wise ones... I've just found some salmon in the freezer that I put there in April. It's poached ready to eat and was expensive. Totally forgot it was in there.
Shall I eat it?? Will I regret it?? Confused

I would eat it, as long as it was frozen it soon after purchase and I am very very careful.

Unshriven · 19/07/2019 12:06

It's not out of date if it's been frozen.

It's fine.

BlackDogWhiteCat · 19/07/2019 12:18

yes I think I must have frozen it a day or 2 after I bought it, thanks I will defrost itSmile

I'd eat it if it was from April 18! Sometimes it doesn't taste as good (not bad just loses some flavour) but usually fine.
Fwiw I always remove date details before freezing because my husband is neurotic about ood food.

MmmBlowholes · 19/07/2019 12:21

If it was fresh (I.e. not frozen) then it's not out of date. You can freeze things to make them last longer...

Herocomplex · 19/07/2019 12:25

A quick google says it’s good for nine months in the freezer. Enjoy!

purplelass · 19/07/2019 12:27

If it smells OK it should be fine - your senses should tell you whether something is safe to eat

Greyhound22 · 19/07/2019 12:42

Yeah it will be fine.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2019 12:48

It will be fine for virtually forever in your freezer as long as it is at the correct temperature (-18 C) and wrapped properly as not wrapped might make it dry out but not become unsafe.

Ninkaninus · 19/07/2019 12:49

It’s frozen so it’ll be fine.

BlackDogWhiteCat · 19/07/2019 13:35

It's defrosting. just read on the label it says freeze on day of purchase and eat within 1 month. Well I'm eating it tonight anyway. I don't usually worry about dates too much but I'm just abit more wary with fish. Thanks everyone

I don’t think companies are even allowed to put ‘freeze on day of purchase’ anymore, if I remember correctly. It’s fine to freeze foodstuffs at any point after purchase as long as it’s still good to eat at point of freezing. It also doesn’t need to be eaten within a month, or three months, or whatever, as long as it’s been frozen correctly at a cold enough temp. It may not be absolutely at its best but it’s safe to eat.

I recently watched a video of someone eating a military tinned meat ration from the boer war. I think your salmon will be fine to eat!

Classic. Let hope the internet never fails as there will be literally millions of people who won't know how to function!Shock

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2019 13:55

Labels say lots of bollocks designed to make people throw away perfectly good food and buy more. Don't fall for it.

You'll even see it on pickles FFS. Ridiculous.
