Puppies?

Recently my children have been asking for a puppy they are 15, 12, 3. Only I'm really not sure about getting one. My husband said yes but I'm afraid I'm going to be the one that ends up doing everything. I love animals I believe kids should grow up having a best friend (dog) only my 12 year old is autistic and takes alot of my time up. I really don't now what to do.

It’s a massive commitment.

An older dog might be more suitable than a puppy. But make sure there are no nervous or behavioural issues.

Pick the right breed that suits your lifestyle.

I meet people all the time that git a dog based on looks and had no clue about the breed needs and as a result the dogs behaviour is affected.

I know one person with two Boston Terriers who thought the puppies were cute but was ignorant as to how strong willed they are.

Some dog breeds require a huge amount of exercise, some don’t.

I agree about an older dog as puppies are alot of work! Look at rescues as they can match a dog to your lifestyle. Some rescues wont place dogs with a 3 year old but there's plenty that will with the right dog

Factor in the cost of insurance, vet fees, doggy day/night care when you go on holiday etc

I would also suggest an older dog rather than a puppy. Our wonderful lab is the most amazing animal bit god almighty he was a demon as a pup. Nearly finished me off.

I have an 8 month old border collie, I researched lots and have had collies before but honestly it's as hard as having another baby. Sleepless nights, everything chewed and it's all so expensive.

Definitely do your research and make sure the breed fits your lifestyle. Consider a rescue, google nearly kennels they quite often have dogs listed on their websites. If you choose to have a puppy look very carefully at the breeder, ask to see both parents. And above all else make sure the dog is insured, vet bills can be astronomical

Agree completely with a puppy being as hard work as a baby! However, in terms of autism - I have a nine year old with autism and getting a dog has been the best thing for him. It's going I'd for him to have a pet who is a constant with him ( unlike a cat who stays at home). He can be brought out of a meltdown by sniffing the dog -:it grounds him. Having said that, I got the dog knowing that he finds animals calming and knowing they he is comfortable with dogs.
