A driving lesson a day -madness?

I'm currently learning to drive, I've had about 20 lessons so far. My nerves really get the better of me and are holding me back. I get quite panicky and overthink.

I'm working from home for the next two weeks and have floated the idea of having a driving lesson a day before and sometimes after work. My aim is to get real practice and make driving as boring as possible. I currently have 2 lessons a week and no other practice.

Is this a mad idea? Has it helped anyone? I'm taking money out of my savings to fund it. I want desperately to get over this hurdle of anxiety.

Do you have no other practice because you don't have access to a car, OP?

I ask because I took a million lessons to pass and then promptly forgot how to drive. I did my best relearning being allowed to figure it out for myself around a quiet military base. Nothing to hit but lots of roads paved to practice on.

If you can then practising somewhere (legal and safe) with no pressure might help. Otherwise more frequent lessons also sound good. Be sure to give yourself a day off every now and then, if only to let your adrenaline levels reduce (high adrenaline blocks learning).

That's how I learned, though, in fairness to those who can't afford lessons daily or have access to someone with a car who's willing to take them out for daily practice, it didn't cost me anything and I learned in our car since DH taught me to drive. We went out every single evening for a couple of hours for about 12 weeks. At weekends he insisted I did ALL the driving wherever we were going. I took 2 professional lessons the week before my test just to make sure we'd covered everything that might come up and I passed easily.

No, no access to car or anyone with one!

I did 4 lessons a week 2hours long the week before I passed. I had been learning off and on for a few years. It did help.

Can your instructor fit you in? DD learned this year and we struggled to find someone with space, she was in several waiting lists. When she finally got a place it was one lesson a week and the instructor had no other spaces.

I would be wary of an instructor that had so many extra spaces at the drop of a hat tbh

I did this on maternity leave. Some weeks i had 5, 2 hour lessons a day. Took me 3 months. Good luck!

ILoveTheHotPriest · 18/07/2019 17:32

He does because he's making space for me - he usually starts at 9.30

My ds did an intensive two week's driving lessons. 2 hours per day (already passed the theory test before booking) and driving test on the last day. He passed first time luckily.
But has moved to a large city where public transport is fab, so didn't get a car. He's going to need catch up lessons I reckon, but at least he's got his licence.

If you can afford it it’s an excellent idea. It will take the fear out of driving.

I will let you know how it goes!
