Hi can anyone recommend a tried and tested poetry book for a 7 year old (good reader). She has some sensory issues and absolutely loves the sounds of words, often repeating them am over and over and laughing her head off at the way the words feel/sound. She is starting to write some poetry and for a 7 year old they seem to me to be pretty good so thought some really good poetry books night be just what she needs. I've searched online but it's hard to choose so any that are recommended would be fabulous.

Thanks

Please Mrs Butler , by Allan Ahlberg, is brilliant. Wonderful funny and interesting poems about school and family life. I've used it in classrooms for years.

'The Lost Words' by Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane is absolutely gorgeous, visually as well as lyrically.

My son also loves Eric Carle's 'Animals, Animals'

Clawdy

Me too! They used to love it when I changed the names.

They never got the irony of Only Snow though, but it's one of my favourites. Along with Last Night ......all those dreary interminable news times I've sat through waiting for a really good family cake throwing saga!

I still have my childhood copy, now taped at the spine due to over use. Just started reading them to my 5 year old DD and she loves this book. Such a huge selection of well know n and not so well known children's poetry.

A Child's Garden of Verses.
Some early Pam Ayres is good for children too. Although avoid one poem (The Rabbits?; not sure of the title) which has the word "buggers" in it.
Read it when I was 7 and thought it the Rudest Thing Ever Smile
She's jolly sound on dental hygiene and the evil of keeping battery hens, though.

Not called The Rabbits at all.

A kid in my class by Rachel Rooney. Might be aimed at slightly older than 7? but it’s great and has fantastic illustrations by Chris Riddell.

Walter de la Mare "Four Seasons" are a lovely set of books, "Snow" is one of the four. They are all beautifully produced with wonderful pictures, a real delight to read again and again.
The Book People often have them in stock, or try Am*zon for second hand copies.

Sounds like she would enjoy Dr Seuss?

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 24/07/2019 22:25

Wow loads of suggestions thanks! Yes she enjoys Dr Seuss. Her favourite is a poem that goes "I like lily Lee, little lily Lee, she likes lemon, lemons and limes, I like lily, little lily lee" she loves the way it sounds and falls about laughing. She must say it 10000 times a day!
