Any exercise / core strength advice for 70+ parents?

So my Dad (74) mentioned at the weekend that he’s feeling more unsteady on his feet and generally weaker. It’s getting him down as he’s always been pretty active (not a gym go-er but steady on his feet and able to do stuff)
I’m wondering if anyone has either experienced this and found ways to improve core strength / stability in older people.
Or, does anyone just have some general advice I can pass on.
TIA.

One of our 84 year old parents regularly attends yoga, the other who is less agile has taken up ti chi. This has really helped with his balance and movement.

Dm has had brilliant advice from the local falls team- could the gp refer to a physio to suggest exercise? There are often classes for older adults, tai chi being useful.

MY mum goes walking every day and does somethung that sounds like Thai chee. advice of doctor.

But also, good sturdy shoes, she has lace Up shoes for slippers. Walking stick for rough ground. REad up on how to avoid falls.

There’s always a huge range of ages in the place I go to Pilates so he could look into that. I do the APPI type which is physio led.

Getting out to classes also has the added benefit of being quite social, although he may not be bothered by that but I know my Mum who is a similar age enjoys the gym as much for the chat as the exercise.

These very simple exercises were featured on Trust Me I’m a Doctor.

They can easily be done at home and were proved to be very effective.

I bought my mum a book called “sod 70” it has an exercise chapter in it which my mum has as found quite useful ...... in fact she is very impressed by the whole book. Google it and see what you think

These are great - thanks all!
He’s really inflexible due to previous sporting activities when he was younger. So I think yoga and Pilates are out - he struggles to get out of a chair 😱
He sees a physio regularly, so that’s good.
But Tai chi is a great suggestion, and that link looks good, as does the book.
Thanks all - I’m feeling more positive already!

Falls team sounds good too - though he isn’t keen on going to the Dr..... so that could be a challenge!

Pilates will build up his strength and flexibility. Thee are a couple 70+ and older in the beginners class. One has to use a chair but instructor can tailor the exercises.

Related to this (and if it's ok to ask, OP) are there any exercises for post menopausal women who are struggling to get up after squatting to reach the back of the fridge etc?

BackforGood · 18/07/2019 00:31

@Trickyteens - definitely Yoga and / or Pilates

OP There are lots of classes aimed at older people around here. They range from people who sit and do the exercises whilst on a (dining type) chair to people who are in their 90s but can still shift a bit.
Well worth looking in to - not just at the council gyms either - they meet in Church halls and other locally available rooms.
If you are on Facebook ask on your local community group - I bet you'll get a whole list.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 18/07/2019 07:53

Being inflexible is a good reason to do yoga though - that's the point!

Persea · 18/07/2019 09:15

@DisplayPurposesOnly - I know! I do yoga. But seriously he can does struggle terribly to even stand up out if a chair. He wouldn’t even be able to beg down on a yoga mat let alone back up again!
I’m thinking if I can start with something gentle like those exercises on the link @TonTonMacoute sent and/or Tai Chi to build up his strength / balance, he might be able to progress to yoga.....
