What's your favourite kind of shopping?

I'm addicted to second hand book stores. I was in Edinburgh recently and it's second hand book heaven. I love books generally but new bookstores don't thrill me in the same way. I love the element of surprise with second hand books, not to mention the cheaper prices.

I'm also addicted to delis and Asian/Polish/Caribbean stores. I'm always looking for new snacks and drinks to try or to find the perfect balsamic onions and pate.

If you enjoy shopping what are your favourite types of shops?

As a rule I hate shopping and do about 90% of it online. I actually break out in a rash and my fingers start to swell if I have to do more than nip into M&S or Primark for a particular item. The main exceptions are when I’m overseas. Then I can happily spend an hour wandering round Sephora or an American drugstore or a continental supermarket. I was in Canada earlier this year and was very taken with the ‘Dollar Store’. I could easily have filled another suitcase with the goodies they had in there but my case was overweight anyway and to be honest it was all junk but to me it was exotic Canadian junk and that made all the difference.

In this country they only real shopping I do is twice a year or so when I visit the Ideal Home Show or some such. For some reason things are more tempting when I buy them at these exhibitions and the presence of champagne stands and bars seems to stop me coming out in a rash.

Antique shops. Especially the section of pointless crap/stuff they won't charge much for, so mostly kitchenalia. Got loads of things that way which will last another sixty odd years, if not more.

Other than that, the type of shopping that DP does - and I get to stay at home whilst he gets on with it.

Books. Clothes. Jewelry. Flea markets.

The bookshop with a comfy chair where you can sit & flick through a book

Lush, smelling the soap and bath bombs etc

Farm shops

Gift shops where they sell pointless but expensive and fancy tat that looks lovely but just collects dust on the side when you get it home

Home Bargains

freshasthebrightbluesky · 17/07/2019 22:09

The gift shops in EH/NT places

I love wandering around garden centres at Christmas because it feels so magical. Ditto Xmas markets

shrumps · 17/07/2019 22:10

Supermarkets in other countries. Charity shops, book shops, new and old.

Shockers · 17/07/2019 22:25

I share your love of second hand book shops, OP. I also enjoy shopping for posters, earrings and food!

merlotqueen · 17/07/2019 22:29

Charity shops, boot fairs, secondhand bookshops, antique shops, any type of market.

merlotqueen · 17/07/2019 22:29

Food in supermarkets overseas!

bookishtartlet · 17/07/2019 22:37

I love old book shops too. Edinburgh is amazing, but St Andrews is even better!! There's one that has free tea served in pots and China cups as you browse.

Lwmommy · 17/07/2019 22:46

I love secondhand book store, my favourite locally is Tin Drum Books which is one of those great book stores with just enough space to walk between shelves m.facebook.com/Tin-Drum-Books-174303018459/

I also love a 'free shopping day' I save all my loyalty points and any gift vouchers then go into town and come home with bags of stuff I've been wanting and no real money spent.

Ragwort · 17/07/2019 22:50

Charity shops (although I must admit to secretly liking supermarkets too Blush).

ohtheholidays · 17/07/2019 23:34

I love Charity shops,I may have a slight problem if you listen to my DH Shock But I tend not to GrinI have managed to buy so many lovely clothes, handbags, jewellery and several pieces of our real wood furniture has come from charity shops,I'm another one that's really bad for buying tons of books as well, from charity shops, jumble sales, supermarkets and online.

When I buy something from a charity shop I love the fact that everyone else isn't going to be walking around in the same thing as me,I've helped stop more items going to the land fill,I've helped a charity(or several)and I've saved myself alot of money.

I love fine food marketplaces. Groceries you wouldn't find in your average supermarket. And local garden centres/nurseries. And organic health food places.

1forAll74 · 18/07/2019 04:13

Charity shops, garden centres, and DIY stores.

MaidenMotherCrone · 18/07/2019 04:45

Fabric shopping

MosquitoInAJamJar · 18/07/2019 05:26

Another one for second hand bookshops, Brecon has a great one and pleasant staff.

Hay-on-Wye has a fantastic shop of prints. I spent three hours flicking through prints of 18th century boundary lines, flowers and their genera other maps and historical artifacts in print form. Loved it. I then also like going to a frame shop and picking out the perfect frame for said prints Smile

Deathraystare · 18/07/2019 08:06

I love 2nd hand book stores - except one. I cannot remember where it was but it look nice so I went in and immediately, a very aggressive woman barged up to me and demanded "Can I help you?".
I was really put off, walked out backwards saying "No. Sorry to have entered your shop" Which sounds wimpy, but I did say it sarcastically.

I have never had that before.

I could understand if I had been mooning around for hours, scratching my head and looking vague but, well, really!

It was in a rather naice area - perhaps I wasn't smart enough???

It was either in Devon or a part of Hampshire I think.

Years ago Dad and I used to go to one in Ashurst, New Forest which was lovely but sadly closed down.

Deathraystare · 18/07/2019 08:10

Yes, me too and what what high street does not have a Polski Sklep???

I got some gorgeous potato pancakes from a polish store recently. They do some lovely fudge there was well. Takes me back to when I went to Poland and bought some fudge. The lady asked how many I wanted. I vaguely remember the work Kilogram being mentioned and had forgotten how much a kg was so said yes and hoped I wouldn't be trudging along with a huge sack of the things!

PeriComoToes · 18/07/2019 08:27

Second hand clothes - charity shops, dedicated vintage shops, ebay. Love finding something unique, with history, a bargain etc.

Find it very therapeutic to go through the rails at my last cal Traid (huge). No two items the same, no idea what I'll find. Going through the racks helps me forget any problems or worries.

PilatesPeach · 18/07/2019 08:39

Like a mooch in charity shops especially books and am very partial to sportswear shopping (that's my workwear).

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 18/07/2019 08:40

Wine. Or food. In a bar/restaurant.
