Inexpensive adult trycycle

I am really, really dyspraxic. So much so that I have almost permanent bruises on my arms from walking into things. I can't learn to drive as my sense of distance is shite, drove into a bus on my third (&final) test.
Tried a bicycle but have sold it as I just ride into things and people. Just crap basically. I want to get to work 4 miles away without having to use the bus or Uber. I have an adult foot scooter but people (family mostly) keep taking the pee and it's hard work, especially when I have a heavy rucksack as well.

So I was thinking about a trike? Like Pashley, but cheaper. Balance wouldn't be so much of a problem so I can just concentrate on pedalling in the right direction.

Work do a cycle scheme, so I could possibly get one a bit cheaper.

Any ideas? Or even alternatives?

Are you in the northwest ? Try a independent shop called Pop Up Bikes in the center of Manchester they sell reconditioned bikes and have a workshop on site, I have bought bikes from them I the past and found them very helpful sourcing unusual things for me. They are on Face book too.
One thing to bear in mind is trikes are surprisingly wide if you are on busy / narrow roads you may well end up holdig traffic up.

You can get adult scooters with little engine's on them so you can just stand on and ride rather than propel yourself

Have a look at cargo bikes. You can pick them up at sensible prices second hand, and there are electric assist versions available.

Most cargo bikes are trikes and have the distinct advantage of being able to carry everything from multiple children to a month's supermarket shopping to smaller pieces of furniture.

Babboe, Christiania and Bakfiets are all well known brands. Which part of the country are you in? I am likely to have one for sale shortly.

Kick scooters with motors are illegal in the UK.

SamBeckett · 18/07/2019 21:07

@Wrybread , I did not know that , I see quite a lot of them around esp in the city centre.

CMOTDibbler · 18/07/2019 21:12

Have a look on ebay - there are always quite a few adult trikes on there, and the great thing is they often have a nice big basket as well so practical for transporting stuff

FlatheadScrewdriver · 18/07/2019 22:13

Mission cycles do a range of adult trikes, plus ones suitable for different physical needs.

Sorry for the delay in replying. @AvocadosBeforeMortgages I'm in the West Midlands. Cargo bikes sound interesting.
Surprisingly hard to find a second hand bike shop here.

@SamBeckett Yeah. I'd love one with a motor but they're still illegal here:(

I've PMd you re the cargo bike I have coming up for sale

While electric scooters are still illegal, electric bikes aren't. It's possible to retrofit electric assist onto a bike / trike / cargo bike. Cyclotricity do the kits, for instance.

If you're going to go for an electric trike, I'd recommend a bosch mid motor.

Hub ones are tricky (suddenly zoom) and underpowered. Mid motors feel more like normal cycling, and bosch mid motors are reliable and can help get you up steep hills when others can't.

Also position on a bike or trike makes a massive difference. Having a really upright "sit up and beg" riding position on a bike gives much more stability. Ironically, so does having a recumbent trike. But sports/racing and mountain bike type positions are much less stable.

Some people have thought they couldn't ride a bike, but then tried a chopper bike, and found they could ride after all.
