Are frozen salmon fillets ok?

Much to my joy, my 6 yo DS now likes salmon!! Except it’s bloomin expensive to buy fresh. If I buy frozen does it still have the same ‘goodness’? Or is pumped full of rubbish?

I think as long as you look at the ingredients to see what's in them you will be fine. In my experience they are a bit drier once cooked compared to fresh.

MonstranceClock · 17/07/2019 09:46

They're really gross.

TonTonMacoute · 17/07/2019 09:48

I don’t think there’s much difference between fresh and frozen. The big difference is between wild and farmed.

Even so, salmon is a very good food for your DS to be eating and contains omega 3 I believe, so go for it!

They are fine. Just check the ingredients, it should just be salmon and water!
Sometimes it works out cheaper to buy from the fresh fish counter, especially if they have offers on.

BringOnTheScience · 17/07/2019 09:51

They're excellent & great value. Most supposedly 'fresh' fish was frozen at some point.

surlycurly · 17/07/2019 10:00

I was watching a programme the other day saying how 'fresh' fish can actually be about 20 days old by the time we buy it, and frozen tends to be frozen on the boat when it's been caught. Therefore theoretically frozen fish should be much nicer. I think you just have to cook it very gently as it isn't very robust as a result of the added water.

orangeshoebox · 17/07/2019 10:01

absolutely fine
also try tinned (different texture though)

stucknoue · 17/07/2019 10:06

It's fine, most fish sold "fresh" in the U.K. has been previously frozen!

FrontRowSeat · 17/07/2019 11:12

Fantastic. Thanks for the replies everyone. Now just need to find some veg he’ll eat alongside it Smile

Why is it gross?

Thecrown3 · 17/07/2019 11:28

It’s lovely.
I buy roasting bags and sprinkle lemon an dill in with them or soy sauce/honey.
I watched same programme as @surlycurly and in theory frozen should be fresher so full of the goodness. If you roast in a bag for 30 mins all the juices keep it moist and tasty

I caught that too: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0006p3j

If you can put up with the cutesy "how to pack 30 minutes into an hour" approach, there is some interesting information. Certainly DW and I have been put off the "fresh" fish counter and will go frozen from now on.

DappledThings · 17/07/2019 12:28

In what way? We always have them in our freezer. Popular with small DC in a risotto with spinach and broccoli. Frozen fish pie mix is handy for this too.

FrontRowSeat · 17/07/2019 12:55

Yay. I’m going to buy some this afternoon for the freezer. Bet they’re lovely in a risotto,

DappledThings · 17/07/2019 12:58

Just make sure you get the boneless AND skinless ones to make it easier. Most are boneless but not all are also skinless and they are a bit of a pain

Thecrown3 · 17/07/2019 13:20

@dappledthings- you can eat the skin if it’s cooked though.
I eat it when I cook in the bags because it goes really soft

DappledThings · 17/07/2019 13:36

Oh I do Thecrown. This was more for fussy DC. Who won't eat the skin on mew potatoes let alone fish!

Teddybear45 · 17/07/2019 13:42

Frozen fish is always ‘fresher’ than unfrozen but you might not get the same cuts in all fish. Salmon should be okay though.

A cheap alternative, however, is to get the huge salmon fillets from costco, slice it yourself and freeze in individual portions.

DGRossetti · 17/07/2019 13:44

you can eat the skin if it’s cooked though.

Best bit Grin ... well maybe not, but I'll happily finish of DWs ...

surlycurly · 17/07/2019 14:16

Costco are probably everything g that's wrong with the western shopping world but I can't help but renew my membership every year. And I buy nearly all my fish there. Or Morrisons.

FrontRowSeat · 17/07/2019 14:33

Ooooh are the Costco salmons good value? I’ve just started getting their chicken goujons which are delicious.

Teddybear45 · 17/07/2019 15:01

Very good value. Their frozen prawns too.
