Weird dog breeding musing

Silly musing I’m having... and please forgive me, I’ve never had a dog and know very little about them.

So if you have a cross breed, let’s say a labradoodle. Half lab half poodle right? Now are all labradoodles the result of a Labrador and poodle breeding or are they a result of two labradoodles breeding?

The things that run through my mind, honestly I despair of myself at times.

Two labradoodles breeding would result in a labralabradoodledoodle.

Pogmella · 16/07/2019 19:32

From memory there’s some sort of point system. So advertised as a 2 point labradoodle pup means 2nd generation (2 cross breeds breeding) but I’m sure more informed types will come along.

Mrsemcgregor · 16/07/2019 19:33

Grin but if it inherited 1 x lab gene and 1x poodle gene from mum and 2 x poodle from dad it would be a labradoodledoodledoodle?!

Thank you pogmella, I wonder what is preferred? A first generation or further down the line?

Just to note, I have no interest in actually owning a labradoodle (or any dog) this is just the kind of shit that keeps me up at night Grin

I think each generation is given an F number, so the first gen would be F1, next F2 etc. An F1 can turn out more like a poodle or Labrador depending on which genes are dominant so later generations are more expensive, logic being that is become more "breed standard" the later the generation.

Thank you! I have a bloody sore side and that me laugh way too much HmmGrin

TheRLodger · 16/07/2019 19:44

If you have a Labrador + poodle it’s a f1 labradoodle
If you have a Labrador + labradoodle it’s a f1b labradoodle
If you have a Labradoodle + labradoodle it’s a f2 labradoodle
I’m 80% sure that’s the case

Yellowweatherwarning · 16/07/2019 19:45

Imo you could just say mongrel...

Mrsemcgregor · 16/07/2019 19:46

Thank you you lovely knowledgeable people! I can rest my brain again.

You have F1 types which are say lab x poodle. And then F2 would be labradoodle x labradoodle. But you can also have an F2b which is a backcross so a labradoodle x lab or poodle.

Things like labradoodles/cockapoos etc. Don’t ‘breed true’ (although some breeders are getting there iirc) so F2 dogs can basically just be like either one of the grandparents, which is why they usually backcross to try to breed more of the desired traits in.

Mrsemcgregor · 16/07/2019 19:49

tiny so I’m guessing if your puppies maybe weren’t as curly coated as you would like you could then breed them with a poodle to try and strengthen that trait?

It will (I suspect( follow the terminology of hybrids in the plant world

Though perhaps a cross cockapoo and labradoodle will = a cocka poodle doo
🤔😆

Mrsemcgregor · 16/07/2019 19:55

flumpybear Grin Grin I do enjoy the names

If you have a Scotty dog crossed with a poodle and it's a 2nd generation with a lot more poodle is it a Scoobydoodledoodledoo?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 17/07/2019 06:47

@TheRLodger is correct

Personally, however, I find that "expensive mutt" is an equally accurate description (and I say this as the owner of an unfashionable crossbreed aka mutt)
