We hired the local hall - How clean should we hand it back?

So we had a family celebration over the weekend so we hired the local hall. Got to give the keys back tomorrow. We've cleared up bar a few items remaining which I will pick up tomorrow. Is it the done thing to give the hall a bit of a basic clean before we hand it back? There were no instructions to do so and apart from washing up liquid there was no cleaning products I noticed anywhere.

We haven't trashed the place or anything and the floor is not too bad given that it was dry over the weekend so no muddy footprints etc.

I'd ensure it was as clean as it was when you arrived - that's how it's always worked with hiring church halls etc ime.

you should leave it how you found it. so if you need to clean up a spill or 2 then you might have to take your cleaning stuff there to do so.

Yes. I would run the hoover round at least.

tisonlymeagain · 15/07/2019 16:37

In the state you found it basically. When I've done it, I've swept the floor of the hall. Wiped down any tables we've used etc and if we've used the kitchen, wiped it all down and made sure all the washing up was done and put away, as well as taking out any rubbish.

Stillstrawberrywater · 15/07/2019 16:53

Ok so you wouldn't say I would need to be mopping the floors then? Would a sweep through suffice? And what about the toilets? Alll six of them!! A squirt of bleach, or a more of a deeper clean? Other than that I was thinking of emptying bins, wiping over the kitchen worktops and sink.

Was there nothing stated in the contract of hire? When I've hired halls in the past they usually give clear instructions: e.g. All chairs to be stacked, please take your rubbish with you, please sweep the floor there is a broom for this purpose etc. I've never expected to clean the toilets (unless they were in a worse condition than just 'used' for example if someone had been sick of give it a thorough clean). Surely the hire fee you pay includes the cost of a full clean after, and the expectation is you leave it tidy and deal with any over and above mess.

Give it back how you found it. If it was mopped and the toilets were clean, do that.

There are normally instructions somewhere, check kitchen and mop cupboard. Usually minimum is to sweep floor, flush toilets, wipe kitchen surfaces, stack chairs ( there may be a specific number high and configuration, tables on trolleys ). You may need to empty bins and take rubbish home.

RB68 · 15/07/2019 17:22

Floor should be well swept and if hoover available hoovered. It won't need mopping unless as you say muddy or whatever

I used halls for children's party for several years and helped with friend's parties.

We always cleared away all rubbish, wiped down all tables, chairs and other surfaces. Mopped off all spills, swept the floor and did a check in the toilets (and cleaned onces when a child was sick). This was what was mentioned in the T&Cs when we hired them.

We never cleaned the toilets or mopped the complete floor unless there was a spill.

I never took cleaning material with me.

The hall will be cleaned by the cleaner or cleaners but do get rid of rubbish, put in sack and dispose, and clear up anything mucky, including the toilet. Other than that, you don't need to do anything.

Hope you enjoyed your party.

I would say:

Remove the rubbish
Sweep floors ( would mop if muddy )
Leave kitchen area as clean as you found it
Toilets free from visible grime but no need to scrub them
