Help sudden smell in home...

First floor flat, went to brush my teeth in the bathroom, went back in two seconds later to get my hairbrush and it stinks of sewage/rotten eggs in there. Any ideas?! I've never known a smell to come on so suddenly.

And it's now gone as quickly as it came.

A build up of soap scum, dirt and toothpaste congealing in the u bend or in the overflow. Running water over it makes the smell for a short time.
Get some drain cleaner down it or undo the u bend and clean it out.

Perhaps the seal around the toilet has gone slightly. Ours had a gap that would would occasionally mean you could smell it. But it would come and go randomly.

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 14/07/2019 22:52

I would suspect the drain to the sink. You have flushed it cleaning your teeth.

I am having slight drain issues in my bathroom sink right now, probably due to the hot weather. That encourages mould growth in the bits of the drainpipe we can’t reach.

I am flushing mine daily with Soda crystals topped with Vinegar, which seems to be improving things.

It was just do bizarre how suddenly and strongly it came on and then went. I've run the water in there loads today with no smell!

I think this just happens in flats

certainly happens in our block.

SkiingIsHeaven · 14/07/2019 23:23

Did you accidentally fart in there?

Bouledeneige · 14/07/2019 23:25

Its the drains. Put drain blocker down the sink and the bath.

propolythenecarpets · 14/07/2019 23:30

Haha no not a fart

I'd be taking myself to the GP if my farts ever smelled that horrific!

The soda crystals. Is that bicarb of soda?

Could it be a gas leak? They add a chemical to gas that smells of rotten eggs so that you can smell it.

Singlenotsingle · 14/07/2019 23:53

Was it the toothbrush? Especially if it's one of those where the brush bit slots onto the body of the toothbrush. Black mould can grow inside and it stinks.

LaLaLamp · 14/07/2019 23:56

81 do you just sprinkle the soda crystals in ad pour on vinegar ? how much of each?

propolythenecarpets · 15/07/2019 07:38

Nah its def not gas, it was a sewage smell not the gas smell

Probably someone trying to hide body parts.Grin

Try not to worry!

BertieBotts · 15/07/2019 07:46

It's the drain. Put some kind of cleaner down the sink and chase with boiling water, should clear it.

If you have the kind of plug that goes down into the drain itself take it out and you may find slimy build up on that itself which you can clean off. Cleaning it activates the smell so be prepared but then it's gone again.

BertieBotts · 15/07/2019 07:48

And yes if you have done this to all your pipes and it persists, it could be someone else in the flat causing a blockage somewhere. If you put oils or fats down your sink or flush anything other than toilet paper, this can be the cause but it might be one of your neighbours.

Quellium · 15/07/2019 07:52

That used to happen in our previous house. First time it happened, I though DH had a stomach issue and had kept quietGrin. Always after brushing teeth late at night. The smell was unbelievable, like you said!

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 15/07/2019 08:11

Not bicarb of soda, just soda crystals you can get from any Supermarket. They usually come in a fairly large bag. + cheap vinegar (not malt)

I empty the soda crystals down the drain until they are above the plug and slowly pour the vinegar on top. Be careful because they do react. You will hear fizzing and popping during the reaction.. Leave 20-30 minutes and rinse. Hey presto one sparkling drain.

propolythenecarpets · 15/07/2019 13:25

No issues at all this morning. Totally bizarre.

Def not my toothbrush, it's brand new.

ooh thanks for the method flying south. I will try that in my kitchen, as the drain there get whiffy.

LaLaLamp · 16/07/2019 07:53

Tried in kitchen today. Soda just became a mountain on plug holeGrinso I doused in white vinegar and left for work
