Am I paying a ridiculous amount for electricity?

I pay £54 a month. Just on electricity.

I live in a 2 bed flat on my own. I’m also out most of the time.

No two peoples usage is going to be the same even if they lived in identical properties. Everyone has different appliances different habits etc etc.

You're best off looking at your bill- what is your estimated annual consumption, unit rate and standing charge. When did you last give your supplier a meter reading? It may be that they're estimating.

If you think you're paying too much take the information off your bill and shop around.

I pay £134 a month. The problem is some things don't change much whether there's one or 4 of you eg fridge, so for one it's always a bit more than a household of 4/4

Do you know how many KwH you are using?

Take regular meter readings and see if you what you consume.

Sounds a lot for me. We live in a 2 bed house (2 adults, baby and dog) we pay £20 electric a month and £25 gas a month

PhantomErik · 14/07/2019 21:39

We pay £160 per month for electric (no gas).

3 bed house - 5 people in Cornwall

Lobsterquadrille2 · 14/07/2019 21:46

That seems high. I pay £38 a month for gas and electricity, large two bedroomed flat, two of us. I monitor my Smart meter several times a day - overnight when everything is off it's just over a penny an hour. I only ever boil enough water for the cups of tea or coffee I am making at that time (one penny per cup), I know the cost of washing hair or having a bath and I check every morning the total for the previous day. I might have become slightly obsessed with it ...... Smile

We pay £60 per month on a 3 bed semi detached. There are 4 adults living here. We also have a dehumidifier which probably adds £10 a month.

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/07/2019 21:50

£45 here, 2 bed house. Me and 2 children.

goingtotown · 14/07/2019 23:30

Is your immersion heater on all day.

hadthesnip2 · 15/07/2019 00:17

It is all a bit subjective as it depends on what you use when you are in but I would say it was a bit high. I live in a 2 bed terrace house & pay around £60pm for combined gas & electric......and I work from home so in most days on my laptop with the TV on.

fairynick · 15/07/2019 00:29

It’s hard to say because we don’t know your usage. I work for an energy company and the best way to compare is to find out your unit rate in kWh and your standing charge per day.
On pay as you go meters you will be on a fester tariff, they’re pretty much always dearer than direct debit meters.
If you believe you’re paying too much then speak to your supplier for them to switch to a monthly direct debit (if that’s something you’d be comfortable with, if not you can still get cheaper payg tariffs) and then go on a price comparison site to find out what you could be paying.
Because you’re on a payg tariff as well I highly doubt that you’ll have any exit fess, so will be free to leave at any time. Definitely worth to look into a switch every six months to a year imo!

@MouthFullOfGum I'm in the West Midlands on Eon & currently I pay £35 per month electricity & gas combined. 2 Bed flat although I live alone & I'm home all the time (I live above my workplace & I only need to pop down for a few minutes) so I'm on the computer, watching tv, making coffee etc.

Frith2013 · 15/07/2019 03:52

£108 here. 2 bed, 1 adult, 2 children.

All electric plus immersion heater.

TwittleBee · 15/07/2019 03:59

Seems high to me. We (2 adult, 1 child) pay £75 a month including gas and I use the washing machine and dish washer both almost daily!

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/07/2019 06:03

It sounds like a lot for the circumstances you describe. Is your heating and shower/hot water gas or electricity? What's the insulation like? How much gas are you paying for on top?

Do you have any spotlights, which can use a lot of electricity?

If you turn everything off, does the wheel in your meter stop turning and can you identify what makes it spin much faster?

Have you done a comparison and are you on the best tariff? Are you on pre-pay or bills? If you rent, your landlord isn't allowed to force you onto a certain tariff/supplier or even have a top up meter, you are allowed to change and have normal credit bills if the utilty company will accept you, which they should unless you have a history of not paying on time.
