How can I make my bed sheet white again?

jonesyyy · 14/07/2019 17:55

My fitted sheet has gone a funny colour over time, despite me washing it.

I'd like to get it white again like new, what can I use to do this?

Is it a cotton sheet, or poly cotton?

Aquamarine1029 · 14/07/2019 18:01

Have you tried adding bleach to the wash?

MadisonMontgomery · 14/07/2019 18:01

Ace bleach for whites.

Hang out in the sunshine

Badabingbadabum · 14/07/2019 18:03

Biotex powder to a hot wash. Make use of hot sun and hang out to dry if can.

jonesyyy · 14/07/2019 18:26

@Knittedfairies it's Egyptian cotton if that helps

@Aquamarine1029 Apparently bleach isn't good for sheets? Sad

I've put it on a 60 wash with bio gel, don't know if that will work

Strong sunlight is an excellent clarifier so leave it out before you wash it. Oxy powder. Wash it at 60 by dont overload the machine.
Give it lots of space. Dry on the line.
How long have u had it?
My ex spanish mil had a way with whites that was like sorcery. She lut it down to leaving it the hot Canarian sun. And, reminded me, if the sun does that to cotton, imagine what it's doing to your skin....

jonesyyy · 14/07/2019 18:32

@lolaflores had it since we moved in last year so October ish? There's no sun in my back garden at the moment, I should have waited to wash it tomorrow morning Sad

I will hang it to dry on the line though anyway

Leave it out overnight as the sun will get into your garden first thing

I always soak whites for 3/4 days and line dry for 2 days in the school holidays

DonPablo · 14/07/2019 18:45

Yy to everything everyone else has said, especially about the sunshine.

But, if it doesn't work I would mix some thin bleach in a big bucket of water and soak it in there for a couple of hours before washing it again.

Not the thick loo bleach, thin bleach. Doing it too often will weaken the fibres but it sounds like you're already unhappy with the appearance of the sheet, so as a one off, it should be OK.

Do you always wash it with lights or whites only? Because going forward that's what I would do and I always add some whitener or stain remover to pure white washes.

jonesyyy · 14/07/2019 18:47

@DonPablo if I'm washing bed sheets I don't put them in with anything else.

Now that I think of it a lot of my whites have gone a funny grey colour! Despite not mixing them with other colours Confused

Would all theses tips work on very off white school polo shirts??

Why oh why do any schools think white is a good colour for primary children???

BillywigSting · 14/07/2019 18:50

If you have a big enough patch of grass, surprisingly enough drying it in the sun on the grass gets it really white.

You get the bleaching effect from the sun from above, but the grass underneath also releases oxidising agents as it photosynthesises.

I was a bit sceptical but I tried it and it's honestly like witchcraft.

jonesyyy · 14/07/2019 18:51

@BillywigSting I have no grass unfortunately! Sad

I have heard good things about napisan too

Imoan123 · 14/07/2019 18:54

I read about using Milton sterilizing solution on white shirts so should be ok for sheets.

DearTeddyRobinson · 14/07/2019 19:41

Get some of that Dylon stuff for getting net curtains white. It's absolutely miraculous. Then line dry in the sun.

bagpiss · 14/07/2019 19:48

If you have a VERY large stock pot, you can boil them -gently-on the hob with a couple of teaspoons of washing powder, do them for about 20 -30 mins, keep a watch over it because you will need to 'puff them down' with a big spoon as you get a few air bubbles from the boiling. Let them cool before tipping into the sink then Just rinse and spin in machine after. Brings them up lovely.
Tea towels can also be done like this.

CrowleysBentley · 14/07/2019 20:15

This stuff is great. My sheets are all nice white cotton, and I chuck one of these in with the wash every 6 weeks or so and it keeps them nice and white.
