Is there a way to solve my family Christmas plans dilemma

crayolabutton · 14/07/2019 17:33

We are very rarely in the uk but come from the uk.

This year we are spending Christmas here and so have invited all the family to us for Christmas dinner as they always invite us and we can never attend.
Dh asked his sister and she has said they can’t attend unless their dog can come with them.
The problem is we will be in a short term rental flat that doesn’t allow dogs. They live 1.5 hours away from the flat. We can’t think of a way to help them be able to come.
Any solutions gratefully received.

Are there are local boarding kennels open that could take the dog for one night? Could she stay the night with you and then collect dog in the morning?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 14/07/2019 17:37

Could you ask landlord if you could have the dog on christmas as a one off?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 14/07/2019 17:39

Sorry I'm one of those annoying people who would want the dog with me. Full disclosure!

That aside can you include them for something else instead? Some nice Christmas Eve drinks somewhere or Boxing Day lunch or whatnot?

Good point about asking the landlord too- you're way ahead of time so he/she might be able to arrange a deep clean after?

BlueMerchant · 14/07/2019 17:42

The dog will be a visitor. Am sure to get no dogs rule will mean no dogs actually living there but a dog visiting shouldn't be a problem?

UrsulaPandress · 14/07/2019 17:43

How long are they plannning to be with you? We often take the dog and leave him in the car with regular visits to get him out for a wee break.

Hadalifeonce · 14/07/2019 17:43

I second looking for a local kennel, did this for SiL a few years ago.

Ellmau · 14/07/2019 17:44

I would assume that the no dog rule is for resident dogs. Visiting for one day should be OK, assuming DDog is well behaved and doesn't damage anything. It's not as if your landlord is going to carry out a spot check inspection on Christmas Day.

DonkeyHohtay · 14/07/2019 17:44

Solution - they come without the dog. Or they don't come.

It's very simple.

bigmap · 14/07/2019 17:46

Is it a small dog? I'd just let them bring it. How likely is it the landlord will show up on Christmas Day. It might be a flat rule they just add to their T&C's but actually don't mind on a case by case basis

WhatsInAName19 · 14/07/2019 17:48

I think that if she really values spending a rare Christmas with her brother, she will make it happen.

CrotchetyQuaver · 14/07/2019 17:51

What sort of dog is it, if it's just a day visitor I can't see that causing a problem?

AJPTaylor · 14/07/2019 17:53

I would say as well that the dog would be fine for 1 night.

McShakey · 14/07/2019 17:55

I’d see if there were kennels available, or meet up for Christmas Eve/Boxing Day. But if it’s a small dog I’d let her bring it, I’m sure the landlord will never know

crayolabutton · 14/07/2019 17:55

No pets are allowed in the T&C and we do like to stick to the rules as only takes an annoying nosey neighbour to get us into trouble with if the dog barks or whatever.

I’ve only seen it once but it’s not a small dog, no idea what breed so not sure how that would all work in a small flat.
I’m wondering if it’s an excuse not to be with us too maybe but dh a bit sad if that’s the case. She did reply saying great idea but need somewhere to put dog when he invited her so wasn’t a negative reply iyswim.

Well either you find a different rental, they find a dog sitter or they can't come.

Herocomplex · 14/07/2019 17:57

Eh? Why are people suggesting taking the dog. The rule is no dogs. Therefore no dogs!
I don’t see why it’s your problem to solve really. If she can’t find anyone to look after her dog, and she can’t bring it then she can’t come. Even if you offered to host in a restaurant it would still be a problem. Does she want to host, is that the problem?

RainOrSun · 14/07/2019 18:03

When you say short term rental, do you mean a place that is your home for 3 months? At which point a dog visiting I would say is fine (ex landlord).
If you mean a 2 week holiday let, it's less clear (and are you sure the kitchen will be well equipped enough to do Christmas dinner for lots of guests- you may well find insufficient plates, glasses, knives, chairs etc)

Dippypippy1980 · 14/07/2019 18:05

Are they staying overnight? If not, Surely they would leave the dog home alone for a few hours? They must go out to dinner, work, etc without him?

Maybe they don’t really want to come

Apolloanddaphne · 14/07/2019 18:12

They can't leave the dog even if they plan to go home afterwards. They live 1.5 hours always. That's a 3 hour round trip so even leaving the dog alone for 5 hours would mean only 2 hours to spend there. That's not worth it. Hopefully they can find someone to look after the dog for them.

FriarTuck · 14/07/2019 18:15

This.

Springcleanish · 14/07/2019 18:21

Surely the dog can visit for a few hours in the day, perhaps ask you landlord if they can visit for the day? By the time they arrive, eat lunch, afternoon walk, the dog will barely be in the house. If they want to stay locally, is there a Travelodge nearby? They accept dogs for I think an additional £10 a night, and we have found Christmas night is always very cheap there.

crayolabutton · 14/07/2019 18:48

Tenancy is 8 months so not too short but specifically says in the agreement no animals allowed at any point during the tenancy. “If it is found animals have been inside the property a pest control company will be required to deep clean the apartment for the avoidance of fleas and other pests remaining in the property” ?!!!
All a bit weird I suppose, I don’t know, I’ve never had pets. The landlord is not so friendly. If the dog was small and quiet maybe but alas, it’s big. And can’t recall if it’s quiet enough to keep up with a secret flat smuggle mission...

It’s all furnished so easy enough for Christmas to happen. Perhaps SIL + Dp don’t actually want to come tbh.

Cherrysoup · 14/07/2019 19:11

I’d say if they can’t come up with a solution, they just aren’t that bothered. Could the other side of the family not have him for a day?

RainOrSun · 14/07/2019 19:20

I'd say that's a clause that isnt enforceable- its excessively restrictive. But that isnt an expert view.
Have SiL plus dog on Xmas day.
