Books for 7 year olds

Hi please can you help with book recommendations for 7 year old DD. She is a good reader but can be lazy and will happily go back to toddler books instead of reading a "proper" book. Need ideas apart from Roald Dahl, Worst Witch and Enid Blyton. Thanks

Captain Underpants and Jeremy Strong are popular here. More old fashioned but I adored Professor Branestawm and The Children of Greene Knowe at that age.

Stompythedinosaur · 14/07/2019 15:54

The Never Girls
Dotty Dectective
Charlotte's Web
Sleepovers (Jacqueline Wilson)
Captain Underpants

These have all been popular with my dd of that age recently.

Ottoline books are great and with beautiful illustrations so good also for a reluctant reader as it breaks up the text and the characters are fun. My dd’s favourite at the age were all the Malory Towers and St Clare’s books but assuming she’s read those. Michael Morpurgo books? Especially the ones about animals if she likes animals e.g. Butterfly Lion; Kaspar. Classics like Lion, Witch, Wardrobe; Charlotte’s Web; Ballet Shoes; Secret Garden, The Borrowers - these may be too long for her at present if she’s not addicted to reading. Trying to remember what my bookworm dd read at that age. By about 8, my dd’s favourite books were the Ruby Redford series - such great books. Also David Williams are very popular and easy to read. They’re better written than I expected - except for the World’s Worst Children, which I refuse to listen to!

Hetty Feather series - Jacqueline Wilson I think

JazzyGG · 14/07/2019 16:07

So I went to look at Sleepovers" but slightly concerned by the Amazon classification "fiction about sexuality for children" ?!?!

I think that is an issue with Amazon, the book is not about that. It is one of Jaqueline Wilson's books aimed at younger kids, it's about a g4oup of girls and their friendship issues.

JazzyGG · 14/07/2019 16:30

@Stompythedinosaur good - looks like a good choice but that scared me for a sec!

Jacqueline Wilson does shorter books for that age group. My daughter liked the Rainbow Fairy books at around that age (fairly short chapter books). I didn’t like them (to read aloud at bedtime) but my daughter and her friends all had a big phase of reading as many as they could. The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark is also good.

DS (7) has just fallen in love with Pippi Longstocking. Astrid Lindgren is quite prolific so we’ll try some of her others next.

Oly4 · 14/07/2019 17:34

Sorry to hijack thread but has anybody got recommendations for 7yo boys? Not Jeremy Armstrong, Dahl or David Walliams as we have those. Thanks

Onatreebyariver · 14/07/2019 17:36

The 13 storey treehouse books. They're fab. My 5 & 7 year old have read the whole series 100 times.

karmakameleon · 14/07/2019 17:40

I guide DS towards the books most often recommended for girls. There tend to be more positive role models and generally he’s really enjoyed them (hence the current love of Pippi L).

He loved the Worst Witch series and Enid Blyton’s Faraway Tree books. He tried the Secret Seven but said it was a bit too tricky.

MarthasGinYard · 14/07/2019 17:42

Flat Stanley series

Barney the Boat dog series

MarthasGinYard · 14/07/2019 17:44

The naughtiest girl in the school series was Dd favourites at that age.

DeanImpala67 · 14/07/2019 17:48

Rebecca Lisle - The dog with the diamond collar
First in a series of 3 books that my 7 year old absolutely adored. Mystery solving with a group of young children.
Also Jack Stalwart books were eagerly devoured, and the dreaded Beast Quest and Sea Quest.
The Roman Brit and Viking Vik books went down well too.

JPduck · 14/07/2019 17:51

Mummy Fairy and me by Sophie Kinsella. A few in the series loved by my 7yo dd

tinyvulture · 14/07/2019 17:54

My 7 year old DD LOVES David Walliams books. And (strangely) quite likes Milly Molly Mandy!

Flowersaremylove · 14/07/2019 18:00

Dork diaries, mummy fairy and me & diary of a wimpy kid are huge hits in our house,

Lima45 · 14/07/2019 18:04

The how to train your dragon books have gone down very well with my (only just) 8 year old DD. And also with her make cousin who is a year older

I enjoy reading them with her as well which is a bonus.

Most of the others have already been recommended above by pps

Lima45 · 14/07/2019 18:04

Ok her cousin is male. And I did have paragraphs lol

Yachiru · 14/07/2019 18:08

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Tom Gates
Yotsuba&!
The My Little Pony series is loved by my 7yo

Leeds2 · 14/07/2019 18:15

Anna Hibiscus books.
Sophie & the Shadow Woods series.
Books by Pamela Butchart. Things like The Demon Dinner Ladies, Baby Aliens Got My Teacher - there are lots of them, and they are very popular.

lucillevanpelt · 14/07/2019 19:17

The Ramona books by Beverly Cleary.

She is a brilliant character. DD keeps re-reading the series.

DD also adores Worst Witch, Roald Dahl, and Enid Blyton.

Also recently bought the Teddy Robinson stories (by Joan Robinson) which have gone down very well as read aloud stories at bedtime with DD and younger DD.

Would second Pippi Longstocking.

And will investigate some of the other suggestions - thanks everyone!

peanutbutterismydownfall · 14/07/2019 19:20

Daisy and the Trouble with ... Chocolate/Burglars/Christmas/Sports Day. There's about 10 of them
Anything by Angela Butchart

peanutbutterismydownfall · 14/07/2019 19:21

Just to be clear, "Anything" the name of the book. I meant any books by Angela Butchart. I think they're called things like "Attack of the Demon Dinner Ladies" and "My headteacher is a vampire rat"
