Why are all the tweenagers wearing black lyrca gym shorts and Reeboks?

In the style of 80s aerobics instructions?

And also, interestingly, the same ensemble my mother bought me for S3 PE, making me cry for 3 days?

Awful Fila trainers with a massive sole worn by some girls round these parts. Must admit my daughter is surgically attached to her denim shorts and dungarees + converse.

Spinnaret · 14/07/2019 17:24

Not seen this where I live, but it explains why my normally very stylish friend aged 45 was wearing lycra shorts and a t-shirt yesterday. I said nothing but was internally surprised.

DS asked for some Reebok joggers for his birthday. I had to point out he could just borrow his dad's. Oh the horror Grin

Not seen that yet, but I'm still shocked by the fashion for white socks and flip flops, even though they call them 'Sliders'.

Looks ridiculous. AND it's starting to permeate to adults.

[remembers second boyfriend in the early 90s who cycled 7 miles to and from a heavily physical job every day - he definitely filled a pair of cycling shorts how they were supposed to be....]

Yep, it's DDs summer uniform.
Her winter one is leggings and an oversized superdry or Hollister sweatshirt.
She wears massive trainers too. Her legs, and those of her mates, look like golf clubs.
She nicks her Dad's t shirts. He had a stash of old Versace, Paul Smith and Valentino ones from his pre me, pulling era, and as he is 5'8 and she is 5 foot, they are baggy enough for her.
She also wears vintage caps (although at least she's out of the JoJo bow stage).
If she buys a bum bag, I'm disowning her.

GorkyMcPorky · 14/07/2019 17:55

Ooh, I think it sounds comfy and practical Grin

Skyejuly · 14/07/2019 18:00

I'm in cornwall and wearing a bumbag!

Villanellesproudmum · 14/07/2019 18:04

Flip flops and sliders are different things! I’m in my 40s and know that Grin

GreenTulips · 14/07/2019 18:06

Maybe girls are fed up of shorts with your arse hanging out?

EdWinchester · 14/07/2019 18:08

I wore that in the early 90s.

My 21 year old wears shorts with white sports socks pulled up his calves. This is trendy, apparently. I grit my teeth on a daily basis.

EdWinchester · 14/07/2019 18:10

...my husband said he might buy some sliders for our holiday.

Our kids went nuts and threatened to disown him. Clearly not for oldies.

MitziK · 14/07/2019 21:08

The only potential difference between flip flops (and both types were called the same in the Dark Ages 1970s and 80s) is that one sty;e gives you blisters between your big and second toes and across the top of your foot - and other just gives you blisters across the top of your foot. Unless you wear socks.

They are dressing like dodgy blokes on holiday in 1978.

Aquiver · 16/07/2019 07:12

It's a continuation of the "athleisure" fashion trend, which saw tracksuits and branded jumpers make a big comeback last year. I've even seen some Adidas popper tracksuit bottoms making a re-appearance!

I think it looks great - especially the comfy, chunky trainers.

BogglesGoggles · 16/07/2019 07:15

Bum bags are also the height of fashion. It’s strange. When I was a teenager (not long ago at all) it was all brogues and pretty floral dresses. Something has gone terribly wrong.

KTara · 16/07/2019 07:18

Yes, bumbags are back except worn looped over one shoulder and across the chest so they must have a different name now

Aquiver · 16/07/2019 16:23

Bumbags are definitely still worn around the waist too (it seems to be mostly / only young lads wearing them looped around the body). Especially popular at festivals and, to be honest, they are pretty practical.

Wheretohavelunch · 16/07/2019 16:31

Are they really cycling shorts though or actually gym/running/yoga shorts? The cycling ones have that horrid seat padding in which would be awful worn off a bike.
