Getting periods to restart.

How can I get mine to restart? posting in chat for traffic.

I haven't had them for a long time due to a long standing eating disorder. I'm now 36 and worried I have messed my chances of ever being in anyway fertile again. I've had an eating disorder since about the age of 25. I do eat, but I have to exercise - everyday. Anyway, I've made an appointment with the doc, which isnt till next week. Apparently they can take blood to find things out but you need to know when your cycle is - I have no idea since I don't bleed. If anyone can help I'd be be very grateful. I have read that going on the pill will help regulate the cycle but not sure how true that is?

Thank you.

Sorry to hear about your eating disorder, OP.

Your body is in survival mode and doesn't have the energy to waste on reproduction.

Surely the only way to start them again would be to make sure you're providing your body with a healthy amount of calories and nutrition? Once your body begins to come out of this it will start to divert energy to other things.

I appreciate this is easier said than done for you.

I would suggest looking at some of the latest videos by Stephanie Buttermore who lost her period through extreme caloric restriction and eating disorders around being a fitness model competitor and her current progress on returning back to healthy.

She has one specifically on that where I think she interviews a specialist on it that discusses some of the how-tos, and she's soon going to interview a few other people who have already gone through which might be useful to you.

With the doctor, just be entirely honest, there are some tests that are best to be done at certain times of the cycle, but if you're not cycling then that will factor into how those results are read.

What is your BMI, op? If it's under 17 or so then you may struggle to restart your periods. If you have a lot of muscle tissue, and thus low body fat, that will also affect ovulation.

Exercise is fine but you need to eat enough to fuel it.

I'm no HCP but surely the only thing it will do is force your body to have an unatural bleed in the non pill week. Similar to someone who has no periods due to PCOS. It doesn't 'cure' the problem just masks it

Thank you so much everyone.

I don't know my bmi as it's always been a trigger ( I have that mentality that it will never be acceptable. Ta just the toxic mindset I have accustomed too over the years). I know I need to let the doctor discover this; and I'm prepared to allow this.

I was diagnosed with ASD-1 in March and lots of things, inc the ED now make sense. I feel I am in the position to tackle it but it is very difficult...I only eat the same things day in day out, that's apparently an autistic thing too. I don't want to waste any more years of my life on this you know? I doubt I will never be 100 percent happy with myself but really I guess not many people are.

I'll have a look at those videos- thank you very much. I will see what the verdict is on Friday 😊

Thank you again.
