Car question? About mileage. Boring I know!

Chatting to a friend the other day, we both own the exact same car but hers is 2yrs older than mine. We were basically just raving about how good they are for family life.

Anyway, she mentioned that they’ve got a good few years left in it yet as it's an 09 plate and has only done 80k.

This got me thinking, as I don’t really know much about cars and what the mileage means, but I do know that my car is an 11 plate and has done 106k. So more than hers.

So I’m wondering really, does the mileage matter? Should I be looking at changing my car because it’s over 100k, or what is the normal mileage for an 11 plate? Is mine excessive?

I think that average mileage is 10-12k per year. The more miles you do then of course the more wear on the car. So yours is a bit higher than average, hers is a bit under. If it's still driving OK and not needing constant repairs then personally I would keep it. Cars are also more durable now than 30/40 years ago, my mechanic tells me.

Petrol or diesel makes a big difference, too. I wouldn’t be personally happy about the potential for repairs wear-wise with a petrol engine over 100k but 100k on a diesel is nothing.

A good indicator is the service mileages so my car has a service every 20000 miles or 12. Months so I figure the average expected mileage is 20000 miles a year. My car is now 4 years old and about to hit 80000 miles so about right. Our company work on changing cars every 4 yrs or 120000 miles.

Mine is a 60 plate and I've done 178k miles on it.

Got it 4.5 years ago and it had 75k on it. Oops 😬😆

Thanks! Yeah I’m not one to change cars every year or so, I like to keep them until they start costing too much to repair. Usually about 10-12yrs.

Modern engines can cope well in excess of 100k imo.

As long as a cars been properly serviced mileage shouldn't be too great a problem. If anything low mileage can be a bigger problem than high mileage.

ScrambledToe · 14/07/2019 13:18

Okay, so 106k’s not too bad then! Was just surprised I was 20k over my friends in a newer car

Oh right @Singletomingle how come?
I service it fully once a year

Its just a question of getting things replaced at the correct time and having work done when its needed not driving round on damaged parts, or using substandard parts. I've seen a handful of 500,000 mile cars recently as for low mileage its basically parts degrade because they arent being used enough but thats usually at the very low end of mileage.

Thanks @Singlet
