Anyone had nerve conduction tests?

I am due to have some for ulnar nerve compression and carpal tunnel. What should I expect and do you get the results on the day? How can you tell if your nerves are damaged through the test? I have burning on my elbows and numbness burning in my forearm and hands. Near constant numbness in one of my hands and arms.

I’ve had it! Although it was a while ago. From what I remember They put something on your elbow and possibly something on your finger. They send a pulse through your arm / hand which makes you jump but doesn’t hurt.

She told me my results there and then - apparently anything below a score of 50 is considered carpal tunnel and mine were 30-something and 40-something for each side.

This was considered mild. I had a follow up with the dr who referred to physio for wrist splints.

OhtheHillsareAlive · 13/07/2019 20:50

I’ve had them for both hands/wrists. One wrist had Ben broken and I had radial nerve (extreme) pain so they tested both and said pretty much on the spot. Oh yes, we can see you have carpal tunnel compression (as if I’d lied about pain that made me nauseous!). They also said that my undamaged wrist was also likely to be affected eventually just through use. Cause apparently my wrists are super-delicate! About the only bit of me that is Grin

It’s weird sensation and you can watch on the machine. I found it an interesting process.

Thanks for responding. That's my worry is that it'll show nothing when I'm having all these issues.

Mine felt like it did when I worse the tens machine. Not painful. I had not used my hands for ages though so didn’t show anything.

Only advice I can give for carpel tunnel and I tell everyone this. Don’t mess about. Just have the operation. I didn’t. I had injections. I had splints. All because I was afraid of having the operation. Finally I gave in and had it. Not sure what I was worried about. It was over quickly. After a week I had the stitches out. Two weeks later I was driving. The paint from the operation was done with over the counter meds. I kicked myself for putting it off for so long. If only I had known how easy it was.

I found thevtests painful. I had them done on a few different points. As a pp said, there's two reader pads put on and an electrical current passed between them.

I have nerve damage in my hands and apparently it presented like CT on my best hand.

The tests will show up something but there may not be solutions.

I had them to rule it out. A neurologist had requested them. It was mildly uncomfy at most. Turned out to be something else.

Frith2013 · 14/07/2019 00:59

Yes.

I am hard as nails. Never take pain killers. Never given birth in a hospital.

I ended up passed out on the floor. Fucking vile electrocute-y things.

Frith2013 · 14/07/2019 01:01

I think mine might have been worse than normal. They started with pads on the finger tip. Ended up screwing what was basically a drawing pin into the skin of my wrist (I.e into my flesh) and electrocuting me through that...

Cabbagesoupsucks · 14/07/2019 07:31

Oh Frith sounds awful.

@AlunWynsKnee what did it turn out to be? I'm beginning to worry I have MS.

Mine eventually was diagnosed to be arthritis in my neck!

FuzzyPuffling · 14/07/2019 18:49

I have recently had them on my leg. The nerve conductivity ones (cattle prod) were not particularly pleasant - they made me jump and weren't great. I then had EMG studies (with needles) which were horrible. I swore. And cried when I left the room. I have had three children with no painkillers - I am not a wimp.

However, DH has had the carpal tunnel ones and said they were nowhere near as bad.

And it could all have been better with an empathetic Dr doing the tests - the one I got had the bedside manner of a robot.

dawnc27 · 14/07/2019 18:51

oh bugger, friths experience is not what im hoping mine will be like, though i think mine may be slightly different as i think its going to be my legs too, and possible nerve biopsy

dawnc27 · 14/07/2019 18:52

fuzzy may i ask what that was for please? dm me if you prefer, thanks

FuzzyPuffling · 14/07/2019 19:09

dawnc27, I've messaged you.

AlunWynsKnee · 14/07/2019 19:47

@Cabbagesoupsucks sorry, mine did turn out to be MS. Try not to worry though as it could be all sorts.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 14/07/2019 20:07

I did - to diagnose carpal tunnel and a trapped ulnar nerve.

I giggled throughout although that was deemed as unusual

Cabbagesoupsucks · 14/07/2019 20:42

@AlunWynsKnee can I ask what your symptoms were?

OP posts:
AlunWynsKnee · 14/07/2019 21:15

@Cabbagesoupsucks it started with an odd patch on my arm that felt like sunburn. That went away and came back about a year later and stayed and my hand started to ache. My thumb and first finger were hurting too. GP thought I might have a trapped nerve or carpal tunnel. I then got fuzziness in other extremities so he referred me to neuro and musculoskeletal people and the musculoskeletal clinic picked it up, got me an MRI and brought the neuro appointment forward. They wanted me to keep the nerve conduction appt just to make sure I didn't have that too!
