Camping recipes

Help I need some ideas for very very easy camping recipes using a maximum of two gas burners and having no fridge to store things in. I am going to take a frozen chilli to have the first night, and make a salad with nice bread for the second night. But after that I am totally stuck. I have googled ideas but it is the lack of a fridge that is really making things hard. Any ideas?

It's a bit of a cop out but I tend to just shop locally for fresh stuff.Blush
Following with interest as I could really do with some ideas to keep cold things cold!

Finfintytint · 13/07/2019 12:38

Will you shop daily for food in which case you won't need a fridge??

sleepismysuperpower1 · 13/07/2019 12:39

pasta and sauce out a jar
large baking potatoes and canned baked beans
canned vienna sausages and beans/spaghetti

Eggs dont need to be kept in a fridge. You could make a Spanish omelette. (Eggs, potatoes, onions)

Pasta with a tomato sauce. Dried pasta, tinned tomatoes could add tuna, olives and capers.

jennymanara · 13/07/2019 12:44

We are at a family festival, so no I don't want to shop daily. I want to stay on site. And the ready prepared food on offer to buy is pretty much junk food, which is why I wanted to cook.

How long are you away?

jennymanara · 13/07/2019 13:03

Four nights.

Could eat junk food 1 night I suppose, but would rather avoid it. I do not want us all to have junk food for 2 nights though, although the boys would disagree.

Chunky chicken and rice was a staple when I used to camp as a child! Tin of chicken in white sauce and boil in the bag rice! I have it occasionally now to reminisce 😂

Homemadelife · 13/07/2019 13:13

Cup of flour, egg, cup of milk (could use UHT) mix together and fry in oil - makes lovely American pancakes that you can either have with syrup or savoury with cheese and bacon. I have in the past filled a jam jar with flour and put eggs in shells to be safe then just taken a uht milk. Recipe serves 2 hungry adults so add more as needed. I find this recipe is always a moral boost for the kids when camping and a nice treat.

Pack of wraps - heat wrap in pan add ham, shredded veg and cheese till melted - also yummy.

We tend to graze more when camping as it's easier than cooking big meals.

Homemadelife · 13/07/2019 13:17

Just read you don't have a fridge - things like bacon that are cured are generally ok if unopened and kept out of sun. A lot of festivals have a corner shop now where you can buy basics like cheese that can be added to meals. Cheese pasta is another good filler that can be spiced up for adults with pesto or chilli sauce.

I tend to also take lots of snack things like crisps, biscuits etc that people graze on so main meal not so important.

jennymanara · 13/07/2019 13:21

Yes I may be able to buy milk and a few basics there. But a lot of recipes I have seen for camping have things like chicken, and I doubt things like that will be for sale.

Cheese, pesto or tin of toms on pasta with some selection from tuna, jarred frankfurters, those dried salami or chorizo sausages they sell on a separate stand away from the fridge, olives, anchovies, tinned sweetcorn, tinned peas, veg that keep out of the fridge like broccoli, peppers, avocado.

Take a large carton of frozen milk as an ice block.

My go-to is one of those tubs from the deli with mini mozzarella balls and sun blush toms. It's not totally fridge free but should be fine in a coolbox. Just stir into cooked pasta with a tin of sweetcorn.

PsychoSyd · 13/07/2019 13:23

Self heating ready meals. You can get them from army surplus/outdoors type shops.

DecomposingComposers · 13/07/2019 13:24

We did jars of chunky pasta vegetable sauce with cheese on

FrancesFryer · 13/07/2019 13:32

When the dc were small we used to have what they called caravan pasta.
It was pasta with a jar of sauce, tinned veg, your choice and a tin of meat again your choice chopped up and stirred into the pasta.
Then dh became a scout leader and they'd have it at camp, usually when they needed a quick meal after being out for the day.

Theworldisfullofgs · 13/07/2019 13:32

Quesadillas, sweetcorn fritters, banana pancakes for breakfast.

NannyR · 13/07/2019 13:36

Are you taking a cool box. I take stuff like chilli, curries, pasta sauces frozen in bags. In a decent cool box they stay fresh for 2 or 3 days. When I used to eat meat I would slice up chicken and marinate it, then freeze it, that was good for a stir fry. I freeze halloumi cheese and that lasts a couple of days. For things like rice, I take those pouches of ready cooked rice - they are a bit expensive to eat at home but ideal for camping and the different flavours make the meals a bit more interesting. Instant flavoured cous cous is good too and very easy to cook.

QueenMabby · 13/07/2019 13:47

Tin of sweet corn, tinned tuna, pasta and a jar of pasta sauce would make one meal.

Chickpeas, a lentil pouch, carrot, peppers and some spices with a ton of chopped toms would make a vegetarian chilli - serve with tortilla chips and grated cheese on top.

QueenMabby · 13/07/2019 13:47

Tin not ton obvs. 🙄

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 13/07/2019 14:02

Ooh I'm going to a festival next week I wonder if it's the same one?!

Veggie chilli - tin of beans, tin of red kidney beans, tin of tomatoes, pinch of chilli powder. Nice and easy, no fridge needed.

Dried pasta n sauce meals (made with water omit milk or use long life)

Pouch of micro rice made into cold rice salad with sweetcorn, peas, fresh chopped veg etc.

Pasta with pesto or jar of sauce.

And obligatory girl guide puddings;

Martian pudding - angel delight, chopped mars bars hidden underneath

Magic mushrooms(!) - angel delight, slice of swiss roll, half a tinned peach on top

Those tinned meals you can get in supermarkets too - one of mince in gravy, with a tin of mixed veg stirred in and another of tinned new potatoes makes a respectable meal.

Variations of eggs, like fried egg butty, frittata (tinned potatoes sliced and an onion, maybe some tinned ham), scrambled eggs etc.

I take a coolbox, ice packs and fairly sturdy fruit and salad veg - peppers, cucumber, celery, red onion, carrots, apples. I can't resist taking strawberries and cherries but eat them up first, they don't last. I take crackers and hard cheeses too (hard cheese lasts a few days in coolbox ok) and longlife sandwich paste, tinned ham and peanut butter/marmite, and we have a "spread/make your own" type breakfast and lunch with those things. A watermelon will do reasonably well a couple of days if you only slice as needed, too!

Pasta with tuna, onion, garlic, herbs, tinned sweetcorn and a tin of condensed mushroom soup as a sauce....just as nice with rice

Tinned tuna and tinned sweetcorn with a jar of tomato sauce and pasta
Heinz Creationz Mexican beans with rice or tortilla wraps
Heinz Creationz Italian beans with pasta
Heinz Creationz lentil curry with rice
Heinz Creationz Spanish beans with tinned potatoes
Loyd Grossman Moroccan tagine gastro cooking sauce with a tin of chickpeas (will need to simmer for about 20 minutes so the chickpeas are quite soft), served with couscous.
Falafel made using a packet mix www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/alfez-falafel-mix/515812-72901-72902 with couscous or in tortillas.

For breakfast we do pancakes using Sainsbury’s pancake shaker because you only need to add water to it. www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/batter-and-pancake-mixes/sainsburys-pancake-shaker-155g

picklemepopcorn · 13/07/2019 14:40

We did this every year for a while.

Mattesons smoked sausage don't need the fridge, nor pepperami.

Tin mixed beans, tin tomatoes, tin sweet corn, 1 smoked sausage and 1 peperami. Heat it all through, adding garlic, mixed herbs, smoked paprika and chopped onions if you can be bothered.

Lovely.

Also, baked beans, mattesons sausage, and tinned potatoes.

Instant noodles.

I'd take frozen raw and cooked ingredients to help with keeping everything else cool, too. Bacon or sausage for breakfast every day. Happy days.

You could take frozen meals for a few nights, in a cool box with ice packs they’ll defrost slowly and keep cool. We once took a frozen meatball pasta for the first night and ended up eating out as it was still frozen solid after 7 hours!

Corned beef hash is easy, onions, tinned tomatoes, tin of corned beef, served with smash or tinned/fresh potatoes.

Tuna pasta with salad.

With a cool box most things will keep fresh for long enough. Just get decent ice packs from a camping shop.
