Moon landing 1969

Just watching a programme about the 1st men on the moon. I'm still not convinced that we actually did it. I would love to think that we did, but I just don't think that the technology of the time was capable of doing that.
What do you think, did the human race actually land on the moon in 1969 and return safely to earth?

It did happen, I’m sure if it was a hoax then after 50 years we would know by now. Yes it’s amazing they had the technology to do it but it was still risky. The three men that went to the moon knew there was a risk hat they wouldn’t return but still felt confident enough to do it.
I always wondered why know one else has been since though?..
Even in the 1940s the Americans had the technology to build the ‘dirty bomb’. Those horrible radioactive bombs designed to kill millions of people within seconds. Look what they did in Japan.

Turn that around - for what reason should there be more manned missions versus the sorts of space exploration which are being done? The Chinese are apparently planning one at some point, I'm not sure if there is any specific motivation other than as a badge of superpower status.

I was talking about the moon landings today, funnily enough. I was 8 1/2 then and I have absolutely no memory of it, anyone else the same age?
My mum said she stayed up and watched it, she wondered how they would get them back, so it's not like our household completely ignored it. My dad vaguely remembers it, but he was working nights so didn't see the live footage. It must have been discussed in school, and in newspapers etc but I've got a complete blank.
I do remember the splashdown of Appollo 13, we had it shown on the school's tv, (we were in another country then) . Really bugs me!

Because the physics and maths geniuses of the world figured it out and made it happen. The physics of it were fairly simple. It was the maths that proved more difficult.

Back in the 80s and before that computers still did all kinds of powerful stuff, when I think what I programmed computers to do with limited resources it was remarkable but possible, it was the same in the 60s.

And the engineering and materials science - but all part of an iterative process.

Yes, me - the school had a video recorder so we watched it (I assume the next day) on that.
I had older brothers, one of whom built an airfix model of Saturn 5, complete with lunar module and the command module.

Errol I should imagine our school did something similar but I have no memory of it, so frustrating.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/07/2019 13:45

I think things from that young that we 'remember' are only retained if we've thought about them betweentimes, memories of memories rather than a 'direct recording' IYSWIM. I don't remember any details of the event.

Yes, some of it was luck and they knew it was a big risk. Speeches were written for multiple scenarios of failures.

are quite disturbing and easily disproven (even if the guy himself didn't keep changing his story.
bellinisurge · 15/07/2019 13:55

Why do you think it didn't happen? Ffs.
