Question about Motability Scheme

HotChocolateLover · 12/07/2019 17:44

I’m thinking about applying for a car through The Motability Scheme as I receive higher rate mobility for epilepsy. Obviously that means I don’t drive myself so my husband would be the nominated driver. There’s one thing we can’t work out though and wondered if anyone has experience. Basically, he will be going away for work next year on 4 separate occasions for a week at a time. Would he be allowed to take the Motability car? There is no-one else here to drive me so it would just be sat on the drive all week if he doesn’t take it. I will either have to work from home on those weeks or get a lift from my mum.
Thanks.

My husband is disabled and I drive our motability car everywhere including to work. I told the dealer that I would be doing this etc obviously before hand as otherwise we wouldn't have got a motability car and was told it was fine. It has to benefit the disabled person and me being in employment benefits him.

Ladvisor · 12/07/2019 23:18

Exactly Damia I can't work anymore, I tried until it got too complicated with all the known unknowns.
I don't even go gallivanting when he's in respite. Mostly I sit and hold my head but Hey! It's a free car!

serenadoundy · 12/07/2019 23:35

@ serenadoundy Aye, right. Ok. Wink

Not a clue what you mean.

Ignore me, I'm " renting away at nothing " and the fact that you appear to know nothing about the Motability scheme and it's nuances or even, seemingly, disabled car tax...means you are an expert.
You gave good advice.
You were right.
You weren't wrong.
Some people eh?
Rabbiting on about their own life and experience as if it meant they knew anything!
I mean, ffs, how unreasonable is that?

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/07/2019 00:36

I think, technically he can't, but do check.
I'm not sure the dealer would know, or care, they are selling you a car.
It's unlikely anyone would know, or care, but if it is wrong it could affect your insurance.

serenadoundy · 13/07/2019 00:37

I'm so creased at your mad rants, honestly.

You would think I had disagreed with you Confused

Walnutwhipster · 13/07/2019 00:42

No he can't take the car. The car is only to be used for you when you're in it or for your benefit, e.g. running errands for you. In some cases on their site it states they place trackers on cars where the claimant wont be driving. He can't use it like a family car. I'll see if I can find where it states it.

Ladvisor · 13/07/2019 01:21

It doesn't affect insurance, the driver is insured OP isn't driver.
They're not 'selling' a car, it's leased under the Motability scheme. Dealers have to comply with all regulations of scheme.

As to the fucking nonsense of trackers in cars...🤦🏻‍♀️

HotChocolateLover · 13/07/2019 08:26

Thanks everyone. I have looked at the link provided by the PP and will check with the dealer. Quite excited as our elderly car is about to conk out and it will be good to have something reliable.

OP posts:
HotChocolateLover · 13/07/2019 08:27

Btw @Ladvisor I will never be driving it as I have epilepsy.

NorfolksGiven · 13/07/2019 08:42

They can and do use trackers.. (not saying for op's case) just pointing out that it isn't 'fucking nonsense' Hmm

www.motability.org.uk/contact/faqs/do-you-use-location-trackers

Mitebiteatnite · 13/07/2019 08:56

Location trackers are only used in extreme circumstances. So if the claimant lived permanently in a home but had a motability car, the potential for misuse is huge and a tracker can be fitted. Also if none of the named drivers actually live with the claimant. They wouldn't fit a tracker under normal circumstances.

Organisedclutter · 13/07/2019 22:12

HotChocolateLover, sorry if I caused the rants.
I posted about disability tax class rules, because in London, 'misuse' of disability tax class definitely does get policed, at least in the Congestion Charge Zone and ULEZ, and partners/parents using it to 'earn on the disabled persons behalf' definitely come under misuse unless they are working for a business owned by the disabled person.
(I don't define what is or isn't misuse, the traffic police do.)

Apologies for still referring to tax discs rather than tax 'class',and to everyone who doesn't have this in there area if this is only a London anomaly, but the way Congestion Zones are spreading it will probably go where they go.

HotChocolateLover · 14/07/2019 09:37

@Organisedclutter No problem 😂

40 messages, and not a single quote of the Motability condition that the car be used for the benefit of the person claiming the Mobility Allowance ?!

www.motability.co.uk/about-the-scheme/how-your-car-can-be-used/

The car is used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled person. This does not mean that the disabled person needs to be in the car for every journey. In practice, this means other named drivers in the household can use the car for shopping and other routine activities, as long as the disabled customer will benefit

This means a spouse can use the car for work, as long as it benefits the claimant. Which in a household is a given.

The alternative would require households have the Motability car and another car (with the environmental and financial impact that suggests). Which isn't really planet-friendly is it ?

serenadoundy · 14/07/2019 11:05

I posted a link to motability on Friday.

ProfessorSlocombe · 14/07/2019 11:12

I posted a link to motability on Friday.

Links don't always get followed - as the 31 posts after your link would testify to. Also there's a subtle difference between who can drive the car, and what they can use it for.

OP: Your husband will be fine to use the car without your being in it. However be aware that once you have it, things like patient transport might not be available to you. Also it's common to have 2 drivers insured on the car, so you DM could be a driver ?

serenadoundy · 14/07/2019 11:22

Indeed, and there was a further link on the page to give the rest of the information, because all of it was relevant.

I don't care if people follow links or not, but don't that's up to them; but jump on and act like you are the only person who tried to be helpful.

HighlandWorrier · 14/07/2019 11:33

A friend of mine has a motability car and she isn't even a driver. Her DH drives her everywhere she needs to go and uses the car to get to and from work each day. Not sure if that's technically allowed but they've done this for a good few years now without issue.
